does pre-op diet change if you are losing weight before hand? did any of you have to lose 10% of body weight before surgery?

This is my third try for the surgery, so third time on the two week liquid pre-op diet. The first time, the surgery was postponed during the second week on my diet, because I had to have some female work done first. The second time, this January, I got the flu about 4 days before my surgery. I actually lost 20 pounds during the second try on the diet. I could not stand the Protein Shakes, but I found that I could tolerate the Isopure much easier. It's thin and relatively clear, so it is not hard to swallow. Some flavors are more pleasant than others, but I could drink most of them. Also there are 40 gm Protein in a 20 oz bottle, so I only have to drink 1/2 bottle 3 times a day. Strangely enough after about 2 days, I noticed that I didn't get hungry before lunch. I did get a little queezy though and nibbled a couple of soda crackers each time. Worked fine. Well, my surgery is scheduled for March 14th, so I'll start the diet AGAIN on Feb 28th. I do get to eat steamed or raw vegies though. Thank goodness for Steam-Fresh vegies and salad.< /p>

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
