If You are like Me: I hate exercising, BUT

:) I truly hate to exercise. But, today I said I was gonna start. Went on line found for free the exercisetv.com and found the walk 1 mile video. Walking with a few easy steps. I gonna start off with baby steps. . It was very good (notice I did not say great LOL). I have to admit I was watching the clock after 15 min. But, I did the entire thing. It went by fast. I am at 237 today. Maybe when I get smaller I can do more, but for now today I did it. And, to say I am patting myself on the back. YAY>:D I am choosing to do this one hour at a time, and 1 day at a time. I will not give up. I deserve this.

Congrats! I think exercise is a must do. I started off small as well. Went walking then jogging and now I've pushed myself to do P90X. I can't say I hate exercise because the results have been great but I do have my days when I don't even want to be bothered with it.

Congratulations! I know exactly how you feel. It took me months ...and months to get with the program. I hated exercise and I was already exhausted because I have sleep apnea and my CPAP was not working properly. So I started small, parking far away from my destination and walking there and back. Now I am up to 2 3/4 miles every morning before work. I am NOT happy when the alarm goes off at 5:00 a.m., but when I am at the park and the sun is coming up and the sky is turning blue ... wow! I feel really good -- so good that sometimes I throw in an extra quarter mile just because I am happy! Does my body ache when I am done? OH YEAH! And, since I haven't received my new CPAP I get tired once I am at work ... but I work it out. Point is ... I sooooooo hated exercise, but the resulting weight loss has changed everything for me. I listen to music on my iPod while I walk and it takes me back to my youth .. LOL It is really hard for me to believe sometimes that I waited so long to do this. But I am very glad that I did.

Bottom line, we all have to get into it at our own pace. You are doing great and should be VERY PROUD. When you see the numbers drop on the scale you'll be jumping for joy!

I am so proud of you. You have taken a huge step towards weight loss and more importantly better health. It is so tough to start, but I promise it gets better. I started working out about 4 months post op. I started out with a moderate walk and now do a combination of walking and jogging. After a warm up I walk for 1 minute jog for 4 et... for 35 minutes. I want to work on increasing the time. Some days I have to really push myself to go but most days I don't mind it. I don't love it, but I don't mind it. The benefits are just too numerous to pass up. Keep up the good work!

I absolutely dread figuring out what kind of exercise program I'm going to be able to do successfully. I'm 4 weeks out, so I need to figure it out soon. My problem: severe arthritis in one knee and moderate arthritis in the other. Even walking or standing at work (I'm a teacher) is extremely painful, sometimes unbearably so. (It's so bad I have a handicapped parking placard, just so you know how really bad I'm talking about here). My rheumatologist warned me because he thought I figured having the surgery and losing weight would make it go away. He keeps reminding me that it won't - the arthritis is there to stay. He said I may feel less pain as I lose weight due to less pressure on the joints, but I will never be pain-free. I was on medication for it, which helped, but I can't take it now because it presents a risk of severe stomach irritation. The pain was gone completely while I was taking my pain meds after the surgery, but now it's back. I've had a series of injections in my knee, been to physical therapy, and nothing gets rid of the pain. Sometimes it wakes me up in the middle of the night. I can't even climb steps left-right; I have to step right and then bring my left leg up to the same step. It's discouraging to say the least. Only 15 years ago, I used to walk 5 miles daily. Now it's all I can do to walk around my classroom while I teach.

So, I've been stretching. I stretch and twist. I bend over and try to touch the floor. It just doesn't seem like enough. I pray that I can lose at least 100 of the 150 I need to lose to be healthy, with a please, God, please let me be able to walk 5 miles a day again.

Anyway, my point is, you do what you are able to do. If it feels good and nothing hurts, then you're doing okay as long as you're moving.

Your post is a reminder to me to be thankful. I have arthritis (knees), but definitely not as bad as yours. I also have spinal stenosis (arthritis of the spine) - doc says surgery is not an option because it is too extensive. And I have NEVER been able to tolerate ibuprofen, which I believe would have helped my pain. But since being banded and losing weight I walk every morning before work. I am incredibly thankful. I remember how bad the pain can be and I truly feel for you. I remember when I couldn't stand in line at the pharmacy to get the pain meds to stop the pain! Crazy, huh? I feel your pain! I do have one question: Have you tried Water aerobics? I tried it a couple of years ago. It went well until I did the "water weights" segment. I was off from work for two days trying to recuperate! Pushing the weights into the Water awakened my spinal stenosis BIG TIME, the pain was unbelievable. But, running in the water was great -- no pressure on my knees. It was nice. Just a suggestion, it might give you exercise without pain.

I wish you the best on your journey. I am sure you can lose weight on minimal exercise, it may take longer but you can do this!

i know this is going to sound horrible... and it is... but i'm almost 3 years post-op and i haven't exercised at all. it's not that i hate exercising, i just hate sweating!

right after i was banded i took a running class because i wanted to run a 5k. i couldn't even run a half mile so i gave up.

now, i'm only a few pounds away from my goal weight but it's taken f-o-r-e-v-e-r! now i'm starting to seriously consider adding exercise to my maintenance plan. i really, really do want to run a 5k. that's been my dream from the beginning of this journey.

Thanks for that. I thought I was the only one that hates exercising. I joined a gym, I went a few times. Now that I have lost 60 lbs in 4 months I feel I need to go to start tightening up my arms and legs. My friend told me about exercisetv, so I think I will try the walking one tonight. Good luck to us all with exercising. It is very cold where I live at so I can not even walk outside.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
