help! ate solids when supposed to be on mushies

Recommended Posts

hi.... was hoping for some feedback on what just happened. i am 3 wks post op - just went for followup today and down 19lbs, all looks great, and getting first fill in less than 3 wks. followed the liquid diet to near perfection, and have really been motivated and felt good. no issues, other than some occasional cravings and some gassiness if i drink or eat too quickly. now, after all that positive stuff, i've screwed up and just ate way too much. i was running late today and only had 1 Protein Shake prior to leaving, and nothing else all day. bad idea, i know. just was busy and didn't plan well. got home from grocery shopping and proceeded to eat over a cup of mashed potatoes, 4 oz lf cottage cheese, a small sleeve (!) of crackers with some hummus, and 4 mini bags of miniature M & M's. what the hell?! i know better! but i let myself get too hungry and just blew it!! i completely bypassed mushies and plunged ahead into junk food all in like 20 minutes! and to top it off, i've truly never been a "binge" eater! feel way too full and very, very guilty. it's been over an hour and i haven't exploded or vomited, but i certainly don't want to compromise my lap band site and the healing process.

dr just said today that its normal for many to not feel restricted at all yet, even though from the postings i've seen on here - that's not the case with everyone! this is just the healing phase postop before the first fill.

~sigh~ i would love to hear from others who may have "messed up" too. any repercussions?

back on track!

I would think that solids this far post op should be fine. As for the rest of it ..... lesson learned and move forward. At first it is all a learning process and it's a good thing we don't start out at our sweet spot or we would all be in big trouble.

Don't let one slip up haunt you... it happened you realize it. Learn and continue on. Sounds like you realize what triggered overeating. One thing that might of triggered it was all the carbs. I know for me... carbs just add more to the cravings. Mashed potatoes and crackers (starch carbs) and candy (suger carbs) can both trigger my appetite.

Don't beat yourself up over it. You made a mistake, learn from it and move on. :) Now you know that you can't let yourself get too hungry. :) It's very common to loose control when we let ourselves go too long without food.

I don't know what your doctor's refeeding plan is, but I'd call the office and confess what you did and see what they say. Don't worry, you're not the first or the last that will "break the rules". The reason I suggest you tell them what you did is twofold 1) to get reinforcement of what you should be doing and 2) they may just advance you on your diet a bit.

Yeah, carbs are easy to get down and digest. The things you listed all sound pretty much on the soft and/or mushy side, so I doubt you did any damage.

One step at a time.

I wouldn't worry at all about it. I am 22 days post-op myself, and for the last 10 days I have paid no mind to the dietary guidelines. I've tried everything and have had no problems.

Good Luck!

mollyw30, I agree that each day is a new day. Dont waste energy on the past. I do not agree that if you can eat it you should. Some people do gain weight after going back to mushies/solids. If you measure your food and get some exercise you will hopefully either plateau or perhaps loose between now and your first fill.

I would recommend removing candy from your house. I also don't keep crackers around. Once you are on solids eat hummaus with veggies which are a much better carb.

I was eating solids after 6 days post op. I was famished. I really haven't been able to get back on track since. I think I am getting a band fill next Thursday. I just think our bodies catch up with us from being on liquids for so long, that you just start eating to make up for it. (just my thought). I will go back to work next week. I am hoping that helps me get back on track. I am bored sitting at home in freezing cold weather with nothing to do. Just try to stay focused and I am sure you will do fine :D

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
