VSG? Feeling very scared that I made the wrong decision.

Recommended Posts

I was banded just two weeks ago on 1/26/11. Have had no complications, minimal pain, and a pretty easy time of things thus far. On mushy food diet. When I started investigating WLS I decided early on that RNY was not for me because I didn't like the idea of malabsorption and intestinal re-routing. I had never heard of VSG prior to surgery, and saw only one brief mention of it in literature in my surgeon's office. I asked about it but was told that it wasn't available on the east coast and still considered experimental. I did no research on it. I did a significant amount of research on the Lap-Band prior to surgery.

Now, of course, as I continue to troll the blogs and forums, I'm reading more about VSG and am deeply concerned that I've made a mistake. VSG sounds as though it offers all of the benefits of RNY without the challenges of intestinal rerouting. Does anyone have any thoughts? My big concern is that I read someone's post today who said that her surgeon told her that LapBand is on the way out, as VSG is a better surgery with better results.

Comments would be really, really helpful to me. Any information that anyone has would be appreciated. Thanks.

You have to follow what's best for you, it's easy to get that feeling of regret. VSG may not have worked for you, don't allow others success to side track you. The lapband is a great tool and a lot of people have been very successful, don't give up on it. Plus with RNY and VSG they alter your stomach. Which means you can stretch it back to normal size, If you don't change your portions. I feel the lapband helps with Portion Control, and that is my personal weakness. Stay strong sweetheart, this is a big community, you have tons of support here take advantage. Keep me posted Babe:)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
