Food progression after surgery

Recommended Posts

I am curious, how many weeks did you Dr. recommend liquids before mushies before introducing solid foods. My Dr. say 0-2--> 2-4 --> 4+. I just read a book that recommended 1--> 2-->3. I plan to follow my doctors guidelines but I am still curious.

1-3 days post op - Clear Liquids including broth

3-4 days post op - Full Liquids, including shakes, strained creme Soups, yogurt

7-13 days - Bariatric Soft - "Mushies"

Week 3 - Bariatric Regular - add veggies, meats, pork,

Week 4 - Reg lap band Diet

These are the "guidelines" handed to me. Everything is subject to change based upon how I am doing. I am on day #6, start "mushies" tomorrow. Have 1 week surgery follow up visit with Dr. Tuesday.

So to answer your question directly, 1 week before "Mushies"

My progression, was like this

Week 1 - clear liquids - though I was told I could progress to the next stage at day 5 if everything was going ok, so I did

Week 2 - full liquids

Week 3 - purees -

Week 4 - Chopped/Ground consistancy

Week 5 - Regular foods

I've seen on here that a lot of doctors have different schedules, so I'd go by what your doc recommends

My Dr. is sooo weird and I am highly considering ignoring him (which I know everyone on here hates) BUT He says

Week 1 - Clear Liquids

Week 2-3 - Clear liquids + milk (I took this to mean things like cream Soups and runny yogurt were okay...)

Week 4 - Introduce new foods one at a time.

I am in Week 2 and I am starving! I'm thinking Week 3, I'm going to do some mushies just to survive. He skips the mushie stage - that's weird right?

Week 1 & 2 Clear liquids, which do include Protein shakes.

Week 3 & 4 Everything from weeks 1 & 2 with the addition of creamed Soups strained thinned with Water

Week 4-6 while waiting for fill..700 calorie diet prescribed by nutritionist.

Once first fill, liquids for 3 days then my NUT gives me a personalized food plan based only on things I like.

For me pretty sure it was

7 days full liquid

10 days pureed food

10 days soft food

then I started real food day 28.

Idk why mine is so different than everyone else but I guess I should be grateful my dr only required 2 days of liquids then starting 3rd day have mushies for 3rd and 4th day then 5th day start regular food. So all mine is done within less a week. Odd I know

My surgeon has his patients do 3 days on each phase of the postop so by 2 weeks we're back on solid foods.

Weeks 1-2 Clear liquids (only exception was Protein shakes)

Weeks 2-6 Full liquids- specifically, "nothing thicker than pudding consistancy" (BTW, this was the longest

4 weeks of my life!)

Week 6 First fill. Full liquids x48 hrs, then REGULAR FOOD!!!!!

No "mushies" stage for me either..

This was just about how mine was also but I didn't start regular food until about 12 days post op. The liquid phase only lasted 2 days like yours.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
