Just had surgery, really sick!

Recommended Posts

I had surgery this last Tuesday and have been really sick ever since. I had the normal soreness but that has left for the most part. However, ever since the surgery I have been extremely nauseated. I haven't been throwing up but I have been right up to it. I have to force myself to eat because I know I have too otherwise I would never eat I feel so bad (liquids only of course). Is this pretty much normal considering the surgery or do I need to be worried? On the good news I've lost 30 lbs just from the pre-op diet and another 10 this week! What a way to jump start my new life!

Totally normal bodies respond differntly to anesthesia and a belt being strapped around your stomach. Ask your doc for anitnausea meds. Take small sips and take it easy it will get better as the days go by.

Did they put a scopalamine patch on you before surgery? They did for me, and I left it on for 3 days (though found out that it was messing with my vision), but I had zero nausea. But, if you are nauseas, I would definitely get some meds or even the patch to help with it. You do not want to throw up.

Call your physcian's office to be safe. Your stomach may be spasming due to the irritation of the band. Mine did, out of the blue, I would be retching with nothing coming up. My doc placed me on warm liquids and warm peppermint tea to sooth the stomach for about 48 hours and then re-intorduce liquids. Good luck!

Congrats on the loss! BUT, call your doc's office and let them know. There are meds to help with nausea. You really don't want your stomach heaving right now if it can be avoided. Aside from the fact that it just plain doesn't feel good.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Are you getting enough fluids? I had a bout with dehydration early on, and it was a vicious cycle- didn't drink enough-> felt nauseaus -> couldn't drink -> got sicker and sicker. A call into my doc fixed it. He recommended a small dose of antinausea med (which I happened to have around d/t kidney stones a few months before), and small almost constant sips of warm fluids, which for some reason don't trigger the nausea response as bad. I hope you feel better!

With all the other advice you received, which were all excellent, I would also suggest that watch the medications you may be taking. Pain medications are notorious for giving people nausea simply because your are suppose to have food in your stomach before taking them. I was on liquid Percocet after my lap band and it made me awfully nauseous and didn't figure it out until I stopped taking it. I also am a diabetic and by the time I was more than 2 weeks post op I found out that my blood sugars were bottoming out and that was part of my nausea and dizziness.

Hang in there.. once you get pass this it's all worth it. Sip, sip, sip your fluids.. try gatorade .. and if nothing helps get in touch with your doctor.

Hope this helps!

I had to stop my liquid Lortab the night after surgery (I went home same day) because of the extreme nausea. I actually switched to the tablets instead of the Liquid (cut up of course) and it was fine.

The posters above have great advice.

Congrats on your surgery and I hope you feel better soon!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
