Hello.

Can anyone who's been through it please tell me about the psych evaluation? Is it an interview or a questionnaire or what? And what are they looking for exactly?

Thanks all!!

Melissa

The psych eval is rly easy I had to answer questions that were beyond stupid questions idk how many times it asked me if I was suicidal or addicted to drugs. It also asked me if people enjoy goin to the dentist I put idk cuz I only know that I don't but as far as the whole world idk. Then I talked to the therapist who just wanted to make sure I knew the band was only a tool to help lose weight that it wasn't going to do it for me.

Mine was rather simple. The first person asked me a lot of questions not related to the surgery or my weight.I was putting puzzles together. They got more complicated the more I did them.I thought it was funny.I felt like a kid.The guy told me that some people in the past have broke down in tears when it became complicated.WOW.Then I spent 5 minutes with the doctor.I paid 350.00 and went home.He had my report done within a day and faxed to my surgeon office.

My psych evaluation lasted all of about 20 - 30 minutes. I was asked questions regarding my upbringing (abused, neglected, etc.), how my marriage was, why I was getting this surgery. It was pretty easy - I felt completely comfortable throughout the whole session. In the end he told me that he was reccommending me for the surgery and wished me all the best in my journey:)! Good luck - I wouldn't stress out too much if I were you.

I have not had my psych eval. yet but I asked my surgeon what the psychologist will be looking for and what would cause them to report that you are not right for lap band. She said that mostly they are looking for suicidal thoughts and past attempts. Also that the person has the mental stability to handle the big changes of lap band. She told me not to stress about it.

I had to do this multiple choice written test which they sent me the week before so I could complete it and bring it with me. Then the interview lasted like 15 minutes, really low key. I had prepared myself for a full on shrink session, it felt more like taking of a medical history. Straightforward and nothing to stress over. :):D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
