Can you wear underwear during surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I am being banded this Monday Feb. 7th. I was wondering what protocol was for underwear. Weird I know but do you get to wear them or do you have to be naked for surgery? Also how do they prep you? I imagine they disinfect you and possibly shave your stomach (even if you have no stomach hair? ) . Can anyone help me with specifics of what happens once you get to the hospital?

Thanks,

Debbie

No I didnt wear underwear.. Every hospital is different at mine they took me to my room had me undress and put on a gown they took my vitals hooked up my IV .

The anesthesiologist came in and talked to then the Lap band Doctor. I was wheeled into the OR got my feel good meds then woke up a brand new person.

I didnt feel any discomfort due to the medication I was given but had a little bit of a hard time getting out of bed and walking they made me walk soon after I woke up to get the gas moving and to prevent blood clots..

Thats pretty much it the shoulder pain was the worst not excriciating but yes painful. I wasnt blessed with restriciton right after surgery so Yes I Was Hungry.

There is actually a thread in the general lap band discussion forum that's at the very top where you can post your surgery day stories. It might benefit you to read those. It really helped me prepare for my procedure.

No I wasn't allowed to wear underwear. I was only allowed to wear a gown and a surgical cap.

I urge you to read other bandsters stories, Debbie. =)

My surgery was today and I was only allowed to wear the hosptial gown and cap and cotton socks. They said underwear is actually in the way idk how tho lol. I've had only gas pains but I'm taking gas x mouth dissolve tongue strips. My dr went ahead and gave me a partial fill but since I'm only allowed liquids right now I can't tell. Good luck!

Hospital gown....If you are on your period...like I was they will give you net panties and a pad...it works.

Basically you get back to the pre op prep area and they have you get undressed, put on a gown, weigh you, do a pregnancy test (pee in a cup) then they hook up your IV, give you a shot of heparin which you can't even feel really if the nurse is skilled, then they let you put on the socks, they put the leg massagers on you, you talk with all the docs and then eventually they wheel you into the surgery room where they have you scootch onto the op table, put the pulse ox thingy on your finger, tell you you are gonna have a party and if you are like me you are OUT...I didn't even hear them ask me any questions at all...next thing I was waking up. Once I woke up I had to pee, they got me another pad and net panties and from there it was upper GI, and lots of walking, visits from various nurses, physical therapist etc then on my way home about 4 hrs later. :)

wearing pretty much anything from your home or outside is not considered sterile, hence the no wearing of pretty much anything. when i had a surgery a couple years ago, they even asked me to take out my scrunchie. underwear can get in the way, they may clean and wipe iodine (the brown stuff) all the way down to your pubic region.

and if there's ever an emergency, you never know what they need to do and time is of the essence when you're in the OR. if you're worried about them seeing your lady parts, i wouldn't worry, they've seen that and much more most likely :) we're all human

I was able to leave my underwear on but had them turned down low and then they got covered in pink skin prep solution.

I had to shower pre op and wash my stomach with a special sponge and then the nurse came in and painted my stomach with pink Chlorhexodene. No shave.

I'm being banding on this Monday (feb 7th) - they told me i have to be naked..and surprise surprise..today i was blessed with getting me 'friend". Yeah, just what i need. the nurse told me they put a pad on you and thats it. Hey, this is nothing they haven't seen before...plus you are going to be so high on all the drugs, you wont even care and might think its funny.

I am scared...2 days left of this fat life...and my new life begins on monday. wish me luck!

I got to the hospital and they made me take off all the clothes and they gave me a hospital gown. No underwear were worn. My biggest suggestion for post-op is to have Gas-X strips and a heating pad to help deal with the gas pains. The heating pad helped me more than anything. Good luck on Monday. I had my surgery on October 15 and it is one of the best decisions I've ever made.

I went to pre-op and was weighed, had to undress (everything) and wear a paper Bear-hugger gown (that blows warm air on you if needed) vitals taken, iv started. Then read my book for about 45 minutes. Then my doc and anesthesia came to talk to me and then about 10 minutes later the OR nurse and anesthesiologist came to wheel me in. I got some versed (a benzodiazapine) and was amazed at how fast it started working. I was out for the count before I even made it to the OR. I felt bad they had to move my big butt over to the OR table, lol. The next thing I know im waking up asking my doc if my liver was shrunken enough(yah! it was!) I was slightly nauseated coming out of anesthesia and i had a really sore throat but other than that, I was up walking around, went pee, and got a leg, foot, and hand massage and then was sent home. I was in the hospital from 8am-3pm. Not too shabby :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
