When did you start excerising?

Recommended Posts

Hi! I was just wondering how long people took after surgery to start exercising, what did you start with, and for roughly how long? I was banded January 25th (a Tuesday) and went back to work that Friday. I feel amazing - no pain, soreness, etc. looking to get moving on the treadmill or ellipical. I am planning on calling my doctor in the morning and seeing if I can get the green light to go ahead and do something... Thank you ahead of time for your responses  !

I was banded tuesday as well. My doctor told me to wait until 2 weeks post op to begin exervising again. Every surgeon is different though and likes to follow different rules so I cant tell ya what to do haha. I say calling the Doctor in the morning is probably your best bet. =) I plan to begin exercising again just as soon as my 2 weeks is up and I am not so sore anymore. I still have some discomfort and swelling in my port area.

Mt daughter is a Nurse Practitioner, and has tons of OR experience as well as on the floor. I told her about some strange pains I was having. She explained to me how for these, and other surgeries, they need to pump you up with air to have room to work. They try to extract as much as possible but never get all of it. Air can become trapped and cause a lot of pain under the ribs, sternum as it slowly rises to the left shoulder. Why left I'll never know.

That is why, as soon as the patient gets up to the floor, they get them walking. The more the better to work that air.

Everything my Dr. handed out stated for post op to start exercising, if only walking, the next day.

Strenuous lifting, heavy cardio, etc, is another issue.

I'm on day 5, and get on the elliptical every day now. No more pains.

My Dr. had me exercising the day after surgery. Forty minutes walking a day. I am up to about 25 miles per week 3.5 weeks after surgery. He also wants me to be going to the gym - yoga, weight training, abs, etc., which I haven't done yet! tongue.gif Good luck! More exercise DOES make me more hungry now, and since I have entered into the "bandster hell" phase with practically no restriction and 2.5 weeks until my first fill, I'm going on sheer willpower. Ugh.

:lol:My surgeon had me up and walking every two hours post surgery recovery room and then for the first week walking, walking and then some more walking, by the second week I transitioned to walking and the stationary bike, by week three I added on the elliptical.

I am 4 days post op and my doc said I can walk around my house or walk on the treadmill no more than 2.0 for 20 mins. I walked on it yesterday and it stirred up some gas. Was great! Also, I have an elliptical but my doc told me since it works ur core muscles that I couldn't work out on that until after I see him this coming Monday. I don't know about any of u, but I really do enjoy working out. I'm fat because of how much I used to eat to get full after years of overeating due to trying to feed my emotional fillings. That's right, not feel but fill. I have lost 14 lbs in 16 days and am sooo happy I have a band to help me. I don't have a fill in my band yet, but am doing what my doc says and taking it easy for at least this first 5-7 days after surgery.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
