Acid Reflux

Recommended Posts

I had an upper GI today. Thank God the radiologist said band looks ilike it s where it is suppose to be. He did not reveal to me a specific reason for my acid reflex, which has gotten worse since my first band adjustment on Jan 7'11. I had a hiatal hernia repair at the same times as the lap band placement. I am wondering if anyone has had this problem. I did not have heartburn prior to lapband surgery and I am taking prescription acid reflux pills but still have heartburn. I follow up with surgeon tomorrow. But is it possible my first band adjustment is too tight? Anyone have this problem occur after hernia repair/lap band?

I had a hiatal hernia repair with my band as well. About 12 days out, for 3 nights in a row I had wicked heartburn. Felt like someone was stabbing me in the chest it was that bad, I was going to call my surgeon but it stopped, and has not happened since. I haven't had any reflux since surgery either. Thing is, I did not know I had a hernia, but thinking back I had all the symptoms and always just ignored them, but happy it got fixed and I don't have anymore symptoms.

I know this doesn't really answer your question

I also had hernia repair when I was banded in January of 09. I experience reflux when my fill is too tight or when I'm swollen. It helps to not eat after 6 pm. Also at times of hormones changing, my band is very tight from swelling. Good Luck

I never had heartburn before my band...after a too tight fill I developed it and have been stuck with it ever since even though I have had the band loosened...I have had it tightened again and it is back in force...will probably have another little unfill. I cough and gag all night long and at some point late into the night or early in the morning I throw up...not sure if it is acid or bile. I tired taking prilosec and I guess it helped but then I stopped taking the pills and it has started up again...I am going to try to remember to take at least one a day to see if it will stop it....

It is so strange for me to have heartburn...I have had to stop coffee, spicy foods..things that I never had a problem with before my surgery...but I would not trade in my band for anything....BTW...I had my surgery with Dr. Zapata also....

I think you should definitely try to avoid constant reflux - for one thing it can lead to oesophageal problems as that acid is not meant to leave the stomach. Look up Barrett's oesophagus for one thing that can develop.

I was without reflux for months, and then suddenly it is back - and I now avoid eating anything after 9pm just in case I get reflux at night. I don't get reflux during the day, just around 5am. And sometimes I have hardly had anything to eat that day. One day - I am on the Atkins diet - I just had 2 rashers of bacon and a fried egg during the day and nothing else - and felt hungry, and so I had a Brazil nut half a nut before bedtime. That is all I had that day - and I had terrible reflux because of that Brazil nut. Last night I made sure not to have anything near bedtime, and I still woke up at 5am gagging with acid - although it quickly went away, as I hadn't actually had any food....

I don't think it is one to mess with - you need to stop the reflux.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
