I *think* my surgeon said because it increases the amount of air you take in when you drink. I'm not sure if that is actually the case or not.

I've seen people post on this board who say that their surgeon specifically advises them to drink using a straw post op.

Mine didn't have a problem with straws and, in fact, said that if I can't suck it up through a straw the first several days, then I couldn't have it.

I think the 'straw' consistency theory is not telling us to eat through the straw, only that it should be liquid enough to go through a straw.

Yes, the reason the advice is to not use straws is that they can introduce air into the pouch - 1. causing indigestion and burping; and 2. Why fill up your pouch with air, not Protein?

I thought I would have a hard time with the straw thing...I really liked drinking from them and I am kind of a germophobe so I used them all time. But since I shouldn't drink anyway while in a restaurant and stay away from liquids during meals, it hasn't been as bad as I expected!

Mine wasn't just 'consistency'. He specifically said I could use a straw. Never had a problem with burps or gas...YMMV.

Maybe more gas... same with chewing gum. I think it's more up to you, see how you feel.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
