Has anyone still not regained hunger?

Recommended Posts

I am doing some research on Ghrelin and would appreciate any information anyone could share with me. I will be asking my doctor at my next fill on 02/09/11 also. I am 10 weeks post op from getting a lapband and still have had no hunger. I am not complaining, it has been great to not feel hungry at all, but I am pretty sure it's not typical. My doctor's office said most people regain hunger within 3 weeks, but there is nothing wrong with me not regaining mine after so long. I read a thread about people who get the sleeve having the same issues because the part of the stomach that produces Ghrelin is cut out, which started me looking into everything Ghrelin controls. So this is where my problem is. I am a full time student with a very heavy schedule this semester and since the semester began 3 weeks ago, I have no ambition to do any homework or study. I also feel like I am having a hard time comprehending what is being taught. Since going back to school 2 semesters ago, I have carried straight A's, so I am very concerned my grades will drop. I read that Ghrelin is also connected to learning and some other things. Has anyone else had a similar experience, or know anything about this? I'd appreciate any information anyone can give, thank you in advance :)

I can honestly say that "physical hunger" was never a big problem for me even before the band. And now that I have the band I rarely feel/hear my stomach growl. My problem was always head hunger - and it was a BIG problem. I am 18 months out and when people on this forum talk about being hungry post-band, I cannot relate. I do, however, applaud those who, even with the continued hunger have managed to lose weight, achieve their goals and maintain. KUDOS!

As for the part about "I read that Ghrelin is also connected to learning and some other things." I can't say I have first hand knowledge of this being a problem for me since my "zest for learning" left a long time ago ...somewhere around the time I was experiencing the 10th grade for the 3rd time with my kids ... LOL But, in my reading about ghrelin it is my understanding that ghrelin is also produced in the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (which is in the brain) and further research says that "Ghrelin plays a significant role in neurotrophy, particularly in the hippocampus (also in the brain), and is essential for cognitive adaptation to changing environments and the process of learning." My guess is that you would only have an issue with learning/studying/focusing if you reduced the production of ghrelin in the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus. Don't quote me on that, just seems logical to me. Please let me know if your research is to the contrary. I am about to take guitar lessons and, I don't want to waste my time if it's a lost cause. LOL

Good luck! I'm sure you will be back on track with school in no time!

I have been banded since August 2010. I have not had any sluggishness or debility in being able to learn or understand new concepts as well as researching and developing ways of integrating these ideas into processes as well as teaching these processes to staff. Ghrelin is not only utlized by the stomach that is one of the areas in which it is utilized. I still can hear my stomach growl if I go more than 6 hours between meals.

There may be other reasons for your sluggishness, such as are you taking your Vitamins, how are your blood levels (your surgeon/physician can order them), are you consuming enough protein/nutrition?

Good luck

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
