5 days post-op...still hungry

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I had my surgery on the 25th and just today I began feeling so much better. Barely sore at all and lots of energy. My only problem is that I have a big appetite again suddenly. The first few days I didn't even want food, but today I was starving. I'm on a full-liquid diet, so I can have cream of Soups, Tomato, runny oatmeal, cottage cheese, etc. (all of these things are on my food list from my patient advocate) Today I've had some oatmeal, almost 2 cups of cream of potato Soup split between lunch and dinner, and a few hours later I had some more oatmeal. Maybe 1/4 cup of it. I'm still hungry but I'm fighting the urge to eat. I was told to consume freely but i don't want to be eating all day and gaining weight. Is anyone else having a problem similar to this after their surgery? Or did have this issue after surgery? I hope I'm not the only one.

Thanks!

I see that you are allowed cottage cheese which is source of Protein. Protein is going to help you stay full longer. When I was in the mushie stage I would have a Tomato or sweet red pepper Soup (with no salt Mrs Dash chicken flavor seasoning added before heating); and then an hour or so later have the protein. You dont want to eat the cottage cheese and then the soup because you will wash it out of the pouch. As long as you are not eating high cal/fat foods I would not worry about gaining. There are low/no fat cottage and ricotta cheeses, and low/non fat Soups cream of mushroom or chicken or tomato.

Thanks, Honk. I guess you're right. I got fat free cottage cheese and I'll do like you said. =) I will do like that tomorrow and see how that goes.

I don't have anything to add, I'm only 2 days out and I"m hungry too. I can start full liquids tomorrow and that includes the same things you said cottage cheese, Soups thin oatmeal/cream of wheat/grits. I tried eating the thin grits this morning made with milk for Protein and I could only get about 2 tbsp down, I wasn't hungry for a while after then. I drank Water and had a little of a Protein Shake but right now I'm starving and don't know where to go from here, I'm tempted to go ahead and eat the cottage cheese since I am starting full liquids tomorrow anyway.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
