Where is the best location for a port? (so it doesnt stick out later or after pregnancy)

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I have been doing Lap Band research for about a year now and was wondering where the best port location would be, to avoid it protruding after weight loss. Obviously a low profile port would be best; but any experiences, recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Also, during pregnancy has anyone seen it stick out? Haven't been able to find many (if any pictures) concerning these issues.

I greatly greatly appreciate everyone's in-put.

Thanks!

Mine is about 2 inches above the belly button and below the left breast. Accourding to the nurse my surgeon places them very deep. I think that is prevent them sticking out once you've lost a lot of weight.

i'm only a few pounds shy of my goal weight and i don't have a low profile port but i don't think its visible at all.

mine port is to the right of my belly button and up 2" or so.

i wouldn't worry too much about the port being visible.

My port wasn noticable until I lost a lot of weight. Finally I had a Tummy Tuck (well 3 ..... LOng story) and my port was moved under my muscle and now it is impossible to see or feel.

There are people who have revision surgeries to move their ports if they do stick out. My blog has photos to show how my port used to stick put beside my belly button

My doc said he could now place it under the muscle. Mine is a bit to the left and up from my belly button and it has been visible all along, but at a BMI of 19, you can now even see it through clothes. I dont think there's anwhere you can put it where you wont show if you want to get down to a low BMI. If your goal weight is higher you may not have a problem. It also depends on where you carry weight, I have always had a relatively flat stomach so on me, its going to show. If it were on my ass on the other hand....

Thank you all for your replies; I really appreciate it.

Ultimately I guess it really all depends on multiple factors and even then its hard to decipher the outcome.

Well I don't think you have a choice where it goes, mine is right in the center maybe 2" below my breast bone.

My doctor uses low profile ports and mine is places right above my left breast. You cannot see it, but can feel it. He likes to place them there because they are always hidden by your bra/boob and they are easily accessible and less likely to flip. I asked him if he has any patients whose ports are visible and he said only one so far and only because she has lost much more weight than he recommends.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
