I self paid for my surgery about a year ago and am now trying to find some health insurance but have been turned down by 3 companies already because I have had gastric banding. Is there any insurance that will accept someone who has gastric banding? I am self-employed and need to find individual insurance and am feeling pretty hopeless at this point. I thought this surgery was a good thing not a bad thing??

Really why would they turn you down because of that? You think they'd like it so you won't develop future problems.. Hmm. but hey I've been turned down for acne before laugh.gif and they would turn you down for being overweight.

http://www.healthcare.gov/law/provisions/preexisting/index.html maybe you can get something through this? I thought it was more general like they can't turn you down period, but I guess it's not, or it didn't go into effect yet.

I have also been turned down by BCBS. I was told I had to be more than 1 year out from surgery. I also had a blood clot so that is considered a preexisting condition. When my cobra ends I will have to go join a high risk pool health insurance moderated by the state of New Hampshire. I would look into a similar plan for your state Be prepared to pay through the nose.

None of the companies asked when I had surgery, they just turned me down for having it. :( I am not regretting doing it, but thought this would HELP my life not hurt it. I am getting ready to have kids and it seems like an impossible thing to do with no health insurance, and I can't seem to find any. I am feeling very depressed about the whole thing.

Can you get state health care? For delivering babies, you cannot be turned away from any hospital maternity center for not having insurance (it's law) so birth would still happen, and you can go to community health clinics for prenatal care.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
