Question about food

Recommended Posts

I know maybe the food forum is probably a better place to post this, but I'm post-op (Banded 1/18) so I like to stick here for a while.

I am nowhere near my goal weight, and I ask this for the future (Well future, e.g. 12 months from now or more)

Having said that, I'm a carb-o-holic.....or "was" :)

I realize that carbs are not really useful, but to me they sure are tasty. What is the consensus on eating some carbs in the future? I don't mean all the time, or even with every meal, but something like once a week have a nice piece of french bread....or some Pasta...or a piece of regular pizza....or something rice-heavy a.k.a. a small portion of a chipotle burrito?

I know the portion sizes will be small, and I know they are the 'bad' carbs (e.g. not whole wheat or brown rice). I know it won't help with weight loss, and I know it will hurt the Protein intake for that day... but I guess I'm curious if it is even possible (e.g. if those kinds of foods are impossible to eat because of getting stuck)?

Thanks!

I eat carbs.. I generally I'll have a piece of whole wheat toast with my eggs for Breakfast, or crackers w/ my chicken salad. I had a piece of pizza this weekend, and I had a taco from chipotle :)

but it depends on if your body can handle it, I have no trouble, some people can't tolerate rice or bread.< /p>

I just won't eat like a sandwich.. or a bagel something really bready.

Everybody is different on what their band will tolerate. I can eat anything I want. However, like you I'm a carbaholic and the more carbs we put in our system, the more we'll crave them. Sugar and wheat products are no longer on my menu. If I want carbs, I'll eat rice, Beans or potatoes...even starchy vegies like winter squash. I find that when I get the wheat out of my system, I just no longer want the crusty french bread (my downfall).

i'm 3 years post-op and carbs are hard for me to digest. i can eat the crust from 1 piece of pizza but not the entire piece of pizza... its just too doughy. i can't digest any rice. potatoes and Pasta are hit or miss. it will be a learning process with your band because everyone is different. i've learned to accept that i can't eat a grilled cheese sandwich or a chicken sandwich with bread.< /p>

I ate very little carbs while loosing- no rice, breat, Pasta or starchy veggies. Now that I am maintaining I eat the good carbs- whole wheat bread and pasta, brown rice. I have eaten "bad" carbs as well- but try to balance it out with good days. My band is very loose- I had a large unfill after having lots of trouble keeping food down. I don't think I could eat the amount I have, or the bread et... if I was tighter.

I eat only veggies and once in a while potatoes. I cant eat any kind of breads or even crackers they get so stuck. I try to avoid anything that is doughy or Pasta or rice can not do. Its hard because sometimes I want them but the pain of it getting stuck is not worth wanting them soon the craving goes. I do eat Beans but didnt start eating even them until about 9 months post op. It depends everyone is different.

It is absolutely possible. for me anyway. i have never had a problem eating carbs, except one unpleasant episode with an english muffin.

You are going to get different opinions on this subject. I don't limit my carbs but there are some I just cant eat anymore - real doughy bread, thick pizzas, sometimes rice etc.

I have absolutely no idea if I can eat rice, bread, Pasta, etc because I haven't had any since I started my pre-op diet. I, too, am a carboholic and I figured since I was already used to not eating these things then I would just continue to not eat them...and, suprisingly, I don't miss them at all. That said, I have had some pretzels (one or two mini pretzels at a time) but for the most part I get my carbs from starchy veggies or quinoa. If you can tolerate them and they don't trigger you to over-indulge then I don't see why you can't have them...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
