Sleep Study?

Recommended Posts

If you had a sleep study pre-op, how did it go? My surgeon told me to see my PCP, who would refer me to a pulmonologist, who would referr me for the sleep study. Instead, I saw my PCP who just gave me the # of a sleep study clinic and I booked my own appt (omitting the pulmonologist). Is this weird?

The study itself was horrid. I never felt like I slept deeply. The wires all over my head & face drove me nuts, as well as the CO2 detector up my nose. Ergh. I get results on Thursday.

I went the same route you did. I wasn't required to see a pulmonologist, but I just found my own place that would perform it and accepted my insurance. all went well. I too didn't sleep well, maybe 5-6 hours total? i did the split study, slept 3 hours w/o cpap, then 3 with it. I knew I had sleep apnea because i had a study done 3 years ago but never went ahead with the cpap.

i have it now (renting it for $66/month which astounds me). it does make me feel refreshed, but i am still getting use to it. i'm a huge tosser/turner when i sleep and this thing makes it impossible to do so w/o having the nasal pillows on correctly.

My classmate who is also taking this journey said she was given a machine to take home and use during the night time to do the sleep study. I hope I get to take mine home. Do I dont want to have to spend the night any where. Just not being able to sleep in my own home would cause me to sleep irregular.

When I had mine done, the surgeon wanted a general OK by my doctor. I have asthma, so my doctor sent me to a pulmonologist. He then referred me to the sleep study place.

Interesting thing...

sleep study place told me that the pulmonologist would give me the results....But....When I left the Sleep study "Tech" told me I had sleep apnea on the way out.

Saw the pulmonologist, he said I didn't have it.

This is just my opinion, but The sleep study places have a vested interest in you having sleep apnea since they are usually the distributor of the products, the lung doctor (should) be unbiased.

I was able to bring a machine home to use in my own bed. I am really glad the doctors I see use this method. It was difficult to sleep soundly attached to wires but well worth it to get surgery. I didn't have sleep apnea. Good luck.

My surgeon gave me a script to go get a sleep study, his office gave me the info for several clinics and hospitals that I could use. I just picked one at the nearest hospital and I called to schedule myself. I didn't need a referral from my PCP.

I'd rather have my band surgery 10 more times and go through the gas pass over and over again than go through another sleep study. It was hell, the wires and gross jelly were making me so itchy, the position I had to lay in , voices in the hallway, my neighbor getting up to pee every hour (we shared a bathroom) my hair in my face, the thought of the creepy tech watching me in his little booth all night, all made me crazy! I didn't feel like I slept at all. In the morning the tech said he thought at one point I was gonna get up and leave because he saw how annoyed I was getting. NEVER AGAIN!

I had a horrible experience. Historically, the sleep study technician is to form some sort of rapport with the patient thus learn sleeping habits in order to offer the right cpap for one's comfort. For example, if one sleeps with mouth open or not, which in my case I don't. So she waltz over to my room with a seemingly darth vader Cpap device and proceeded to place it over my face (without explaining anything to me regarding the apparatus) while I was half asleep. It's funny to me now looking back at my frustration with this device and how I failed the second part of the test and had to do it over. Thanks to my best friend who is a Dr who gave me some great tips on how to overcome the claustrophobic anxiety, I passed the test. The key is to take a deep breath, hold it in, keep your mouth closed and try to breathe in ONLY from your nose once the device is properly placed. Why didn't this tech say this to me? Where do they find these people? lol. Anyway, the wires were an inconvenience, the freaking glue remained in my hair for days...I was only able to remove the glue with an oil treatment. So glad that part of the WLS/journey is over. As it turns out I suffer from sleep apnea - I would have never found out I had sleep apnea if it were not for bariatric clearance. Well, I hope your results come back OK.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
