Oesophagus pain or feeling

Recommended Posts

Dear all, I haven't had much of a problem with gastric reflux since I had the band, but I have had it once or twice recently, and since the last time I can kind of feel something in my throat or oesophagus. It is not actually a pain as such, more like a tickly thing I can feel that I don't think should be there. And it's kind of intermittent - a few seconds on and then a few seconds off. I read somewhere that people with gastric bands can develop oesophageal problems, and that acid reflux can actually cause an oesophageal ulcer due to bacteria that are normally in the stomach coming up into the oesophagus. I don't have an actual ulcer, as I am able to swallow normally, but I am wondering whether this means I could develop one and need to take antibiotics to stop the spread of these bacteria? Or maybe it is the beginning of throat cancer or oesophageal cancer? It is really just nothing at the moment - something I could even not notice - but I am wondering if I should do something. Does anyone know what I'm referring to?

I sometimes get that feelling too and wondered what it was. So far it has been when I had a new food or if I ate too quickly. I have assumed that it is acid reflux but feels different since the band. Let us know what you find out.

You should get this addressed ASAP. My husband died at age 56 of esophageal cancer after years of GERD, and he was under a doctors care, taking nexium, and getting yearly endoscopies. He went from Barrett's esophagus to cancer and despite being caught early still resulted in death. So, it is nothing to ignore.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
