I HAVE HYPOTHYROIDISM AND WAS WONDERING IF IT EVER GETS BETTER OR NON EXISTING AFTER SURGERY? IF SO, HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE? I TAKE SYNTHROID FOR IT. I WAS JUST BANDED 1/17/11.

I was hypo before surgery, and still am. It has not "decreased" for me; I am still on the same dose of synthroid as I was before surgery, which keeps it under control.

I am severely HYPO with no function at all. i am under the impression that as you loose weight, there is less of you to medicate. BUT, it all boils down to your TSH numbers and your t-3/t-4 balance. I get tested at least once a year.

Nothing makes you feel worse than an imbalance.

But, i am told I will never get better.

I have heard of people taking Synthroid for Hypothyroidism and them BOOM magically they are cured and taken off the meds?!?! I really believe it was a misdiagnosis because Hypothyroidism not cured with weight loss. (I have a co-worker that claims his thyroid magically worked after taking meds for 1 year and losing weight... Hmmm) I have searched high and low for medical proof. The most I have found is that certain foods hinder your thyroid function. By eliminating those foods, you can help boost function but not cure it.

In fact, my Dr has assured me, I will be on Synthroid for the rest of my life. I have a extremely low functioning thyroid (my Dr referred to my thyroid as being DEAD!) and I take 125mcg per day. My endo put it to me like this: take the Synthroid for the rest of your life to help perk up the thyroid or have surgery to take out the thyroid and continue to take meds for the rest of your life. Wow... real win-win situation there.

Also, I believe the dose of Synthroid is based on your thyroid function, not on your weight.

If you have hypothyroidism, you will have to take it the rest of your life. It is a weight-based dosage medication, so if you weigh less than you did when you were first diagnosed, then you will most likely have your dosage reduced as well. However, it will never get to a point where you are off meds completely.

Hypothyroidism is a challenge for bandsters, but it is one you can deal with. I'm in quite the rut right now, because my thyroid is off, but that's the least of my issues right now. I have to work on a HUGE sugar addiction and carb fixation....and then I might make progress again.

It's very important to keep up with your thyroid numbers. TSH, Free T3, T4, etc...have a good endocrinologist who understands! Also, be sure you are taking your meds at night and NOT in the morning.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
