Do I have to drink protein shakes????

Recommended Posts

So I'm really confused, I got my post op diet from the nutritionist and she has me on 80-90 grams of Protein. I thought that sounded like alot for me because high protein causes me to get kidney stones. I've been worried since I got the post op diet and I just saw that the recommended protein for a woman is like 35ish??? i know I need protein but do I have to drink three Protein shakes (20g protein) a day and then some...Please help. Any comments welcome Thanks

Unfortunately, that sounds accurate, but it's only temporary. You're going to need a lot of protein the first few weeks after surgery to help you heal. 3 shakes a day sounds about right, or at least that was part of my post op diet as well. You're not going to be getting much nutritionally in the beginning so getting in those shakes is really important. Are you going to be using unjury? If so, that only adds up to 24oz of Fluid from your shakes and I think they want you to be shooting for 64. If you're anything like me, even in getting in those little bit of shakes is going to be a challenge the first week or so. If you're prone to kidney stone then they'll probably strongly encourage you keep up with your fluids but Constipation from the protein and/or loose stools from all the liquids are the biggest complaints I hear. Remember to feel free to ask your doc and let them know your concerns. :)

Thanks for the reply. I got so worried I started second guessing myself about whether or not this is right for me.

I definitely didn't even come close to getting that much Protein in. I had a shake a day, maybe two. Even still, it was probably more protein than I had before. I am and was fine. I don't know where they come up with protein helping you heal. I think it's more like lack of solids to not have the stomach working while it's healing :)

Here's an article that explains a little more on the importance of protein after bariatric surgery...

Also, protein helps wounds heal faster as it is necessary for tissue repair.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
