Will I be able to sallow medication

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I am getting my lap ban on Tuesday the 25th..

I am a Breast Cancer Survior which leaves me to take medication everyday.

I was told by someone that I would not be able to sallow my pills and I dont know it this ture..

Can anyone tell me if they had to take medication daily , how did you take it...

and What do they normally give you for the pain

Thank-You

NancyAnn

I was told nothing bigger than a tic tac again, everything else will have to be crushed. If its a capsule that cant be opened try to see if a liquid form of the medication is available. I take children's advil when Im in pain.

I took my meds without any problem- but I think everyone is different. It probably depends on how much swelling you have postop. Good luck!

I cut mine in halfs and they are pretty small. I was crushing it and mixing it with sugar free apple sauce recommend by my doctor the 1st few days after surgey, but now I cut it in halfs and It goes down ok. And for pain my doctor was just telling me to take tylenol before I left the hosptial I told him I need something stronger so he gave me tylenol with coding in it for the 1st 5days liquid form. It did help! But everyone is different! Some people will have problems and some people wont from what I see.

I really think it depends on the person!! I have RA(rheumatoid arthritis) and take methotrexate 8 tablets all at once and well of course pain meds and etc....but my dr just said until my first fill MONDAY I'm sooooo excited anyways until then I can take everything just fine and I really have been able 2 take my meds...but after fill take pills in halves!! Really think it just depends on person like I said before just like the band works for everyone in different ways!! Good luck!!

I can take most pills just fine. Sometimes the large ones scare me so I cut them in half, but I'd probably be fine swallowing them whole.

Other people can't. This will probably have to be a trial and error situation for you, but if you can get your meds in crushable, cutable, or liquid form for right after surgery I would highly recommend it.

I take 500 mg metformin tablets twice a day. I was banded on the 17th. I spoke to my pharmasist and he said I could crush my meds. I crush the metformin and eat it with my daily yogurt. Nasty, Nasty, and Nasty. I gag when I put the spoon in my mouth. Now I sprinkle some on my spoon and put some yogurt on it and do this about 5 times before I have the whole thing injested. All other meds I take whole. But the important thing is to consult your pharmacy prior to your surgery and see what can be crushed. I'm hoping after the weight starts coming off I can go to a small dose.

I had surgery this week. I found it difficult to swallow pills because I had a lot of swelling. If anything have your pain meds liquid and take one pill at a time giving 15-20 minutes before taking another. Mid day probably best as most banded ppl are tighter in the morning...dont really know why but they are.

Was told not to take anything larger than a dime and that everything I took needed to be crushed (if allowable) or cut in half for at least the 1st 10 days. I did end up having to have one of my prescriptions adjusted initially because it was a large extended release pill that couldn't be cut; started taking it whole a few days ago and have been fine. However, I did take a Tylenol tablet the other day that may have been a little too big and totally felt it going down; make sure you drink enough! Start small and see what if anything can be switched to liquids in the beginning to give you time to heal, but cutting/crushing definately helps.

I can take my medication with out problems they are not the large fish oil sized kind but are good sized capsules and or pills. When I was first banded I had to crush them or open them but now that I am 6 mos out I am fine and can take them normally as long as I take them at night when I know my band is not as tight as in the morning.

The stoma (hole) from the pouch to the stomach will be the size of a dime. As long as your pills are smaller than that you're fine. Talk with your pharmacist (not your doctor) about your meds and they'll tell you what your options are. Doctors do not know all of the meds out there, your pharmacist will make sure to get the right information for you.

I'm a week out and am taking all my normal Vitamins at night including regular size Gelatin capsules (Vit D and Vit B1) and pills up to the size of a dime. No issues at all. I have a 10cc band with 2cc

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
