Hello I am 30 years old and diabetic .. I have 2 small children.. I decided in nov. I do not want to live my life taking pills and being over weight. I had my mind set on gastric bypass up until last week when I met with the surgeon. He went over risk and I chickened out and I am now considering the lap band instead. I am scared I won't get the full results I am looking for tho.. I have alot of weight to loose.. I am 268lbs (can't belive I even told that info!) and I would love to be 150. I am only 5'2.. So if anyone can offer up some good advice, pointers, and if any one had also back out of gasticbypass and went with the band!! please help.. lol thanks Barbie!

Hi. Barbie welcome,

I decided to have the band because it’s reversible if something goes wrong or if later in my life I get sick. With the band they are not changing/re-routing anything in my body. My advice to you would be research them both, weigh the pros and cons of both and then make you decision. This site has a lot of good info on it. Some have had success with the band some have not. Good Luck

Ps: In my opinion with the bypass you may lose quicker but you will have more loose skin, and a greater chance of gaining it back.

Hi Barbie - after years of research and contemplation, I decided to go with the LapBand. I had my surgery October 2009. I have two people in my family that have had gastric bypass surgery. They got skinny quickly, but that was not what I was looking for. I wanted a weight loss that would be slower so that my skin would not sag, and so that I would not lose hair, and it seemed to be a healthier way of weight loss. My sister had gastric bypass and she gets sick when she eats certain foods; so she cannot eat certain foods. The LapBand has been a tool to help me to not over-eat. I went from size 22 to size 14. I'm 36 years old and this has been the best decision I've made second to marrying my husband. It hasn't always been easy, but it's definitely been worth it. I'm still losing weight slowly; I figure that by the end of 2011, I should be where I want to be. I hope that you make the right choice for yourself and that you are happy with the results. Good luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
