stressing out on my pre op diet

Recommended Posts

I'm on Day 5 and am also struggling. My biggest problem is that i don't really care for sweets and it seems like everything i'm allowed to have is sweet. My doctor has suggested to me to have between 3 and 5 shakes a day. Thats fine and i like the taste of them but they are too sweet. I rarely ever ate sweets before i started my pre op diet and now i feel like thats all i'm having. So to combat this i have a lot of broth. I went to the store and bought a variety of broths to drink while on this. I too have also talked too and read about people that did not do the Pre op diet. It gets me wondering if i should stick with it or not but i look at it like this. The whole point of me having this surgery done is so that i can change my lifestyle and reclaim my health. So if i cheat at the very begining how am i going to hold up 3 months from now or even 3 years from now. For me cheating on the pre op is just the old me taking over again. The old me is the whole reason why i am having to have this procedure done. So i refuse to let the old me take over another day of my life. I don't have less respect for those that don't do the pre op diet because i'm not gonna lie it is hard (Hell, i looked at my steering wheel the other day and wondered what it would taste like?), but i think it is important to follow your doctors orders. If you don't agree than get another opinion but this is my first surgery and i don't want to mess around.

Nick85,

I am on day 11 now and have been miserable the entire time, my doctor has allowed me to drink all the chicken, beef and vegetable broth I want as long at it is low fat and low sodium, I have been drinking the Swanson chicken Broth, hope it helps.

Protein helps. As much as you can get and it will take you to the next 4 hour period. I would drink an Atkins shake, 1/2 cup of cottage cheese or 6 oz of yogurt (chobani is my fav) and then whatever of the s/f jello/popsicles/soda or broth you want. I have lost 10 points on this and have been while not happy with the foods, certainly satisfied.

What I have found most interesting is to track your "head hunger". After you have eaten your food, and gotten plenty of Protein to take you 4 hours, if you find yourself thinking of food, why? Are you really hungry or are you just wanting to chew. To taste? That is head hunger and it is a great time to start recognizing this little devil as it will be our friends during Band Hell. Good luck! Oh by the way, surgery is tomorrow and I'm 10 pounds lighter! Yay.

I hate hate hate the pre-op diet. I love cooking and living on bland food isn't my thing. But, I try to keep in mind that it's only 2 weeks. I tried asking my nutritionist to incorporate a meal a day like I've seen others on here do but she said no. I am allowed to eat celery if I "feel the need to chew something". <_< I have type 1 diabetes and my sugar levels have dropped, are dropping, all the time and I have to consume sugar to bring it up so my weight loss hasn't been as significant as I hoped.

I start my pre-op diet tomorrow. My husband has decided to do the diet with me. He is amazing! I won't have to really cook anymore. :) Or at least for awhile. When is your surgery?

Ugh I'm only almost done with day 2 on my pre op diet and I'm alrdy stressing out so bad! I know my fiance has good intentions by stopping to eat before he gets home but I want so badly to be able to go eat with him and have dinner with him and I can't! Its really starting to make me mad!!!!! I'm starting to think I got myself into something I'm never goin to like! :(

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
