To unfill or not??? Scared....

Recommended Posts

I am having surgery in a few weeks, and want to know if I HAVE to have my band unfilled? I am finally at my "sweet spot" and scared to death of having it taken away! Have any of you had surgery since being banded and did you have you band unfilled or not? Thanks for your support! =))

I think it would depend on what kind of surgery you will be having and whether or not you get nauseated from the surgery and the drugs you will be getting. You need to have a frank discussion with your surgeon and see if it is necessary. I would not think it is a "given" that you would have to be unfilled. If it is surgery on your knee, for example, and you don't throw up from the anesthesia I don't see why you would need an unfill. If it is surgery on your intestines and eating would be difficult, maybe that would be a different situation.

I haven't personally had surgery since being banded but I know that losing the sweet spot would be a big concern. It takes so long to get there! Good luck to you and I hope your surgery turns out well.

That would be a question for your doctor I dont see why you would need to have an unfill just for surgery unless you need more calories after but ask your doctor

Thanks so much, I appreciate you taking the time to reply to my post.......UPDATE......

Finally got a call back yesterday from my lap band surgeons office, and they said it was "required" to unfill my band if I am having surgery and going under. I so totally disagree. I have had more than just a few major surgeries and have never had any problems being put to sleep or coming out of it...ever. Told her I was still paying off the last fill I had done this past October. I think they want me to have it unfilled just so I will have to come back and have it refilled! =( I am having a hysterectomy and my GYN knows I have the band and thus far has not mentioned having an unfill. I am so torn, I NEED to have the surgery, just not sure I am willing to have my band unfilled. What to do........

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
