Anybody else having slow weight loss?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am new and was banded 10/28/10 I don't seem to be experiencing very signifigant weight loss even though I eat pretty good and excercise regularly. Is this normal? In total I have lost 36lbs but technically 16 of that was the 5% I had to lose before the surgery. Every morn I get on the scale and I feel like giving up!! I run 2 to 3 miles a day and have been doing this consistently for about a month and a half. Had my first fill Dec. 1 and could still eat just about whatever I wanted. Had my second fill Dec 30 and have more restriction but am not dropping pounds. I am so confused can someone tell me whats going on? My Dr. is Dr. Neal of Pacific Surgical Associates, in Lacey WA He is wonderful and all fills have been done under flouroscopy or whatver. Anyway, I really need your suggestions on what I am doing wrong. I will say I frequently eat to fast and have had some productive burping due to trying to take to big of bites of things like steak or shrimp. Is this slow of weight loss normal with the band or am I doing something wrong?

I am experiencing the same thing. Lost most of my weight pre-surgery. I have been exercising regularly. I'm wondering if I need another fill? I had my surgery 10/11/2010. I think I need to work on eating smaller bites and maybe portion sizes? I have 6 ccs right now.

Keep in mind - you may not be losing weight but you may still be losing inches. Measure the following locations and measure them once a week to see the changes (it only takes about 4 minutes to measure all of these spots):

Neck

Around the chest (widest part)

Around the chest (under breast for women)

Upper arm (always the same distance from the elbow crease)

Forearm (same distance from elbow crease)

Wrist

Waist (narrowest area)

Waist (at belly button)

Hips (widest)

Hips (at the dip, if you have one)

Thigh (same distance from the crotch or back of knee)

Calf (same distance from the back of the knee)

Ankle

You may not notice changes in all areas, but on those weeks where you have no weight loss you will very likely lose a half inch, an inch, or more.

Remember that it takes a 3,500 calorie deficit to lose 1 lbs and you should only be losing 1-2 lbs a week to minimize side effects like saggy skin.

And if you eat less than 1,200 calories a day you'll put your body into starvation mode and will lose muscle and not fat.

One final note - women gain between 5-10 lbs every month due to our cycles, so if you don't lose this week, you may lose a lot next week. If you're tracking you'll see these fluctuations. And even women who are going through menopause or who have gone through menopause will have fluctuations though they'll be a little smaller in the 2-4 lbs range.

What is it that you are calling "slow" weight loss? Normal weight loss with the band is 1 to 2 lbs per week. If you are not achieving that with all that great exercise, go in for a fill. Keep going in for fills to keep your weight loss in that 1 to 2 lb per week range. (As you lose, your stomach loses also, so you need to get more of a fill to keep the same restriction) Your doctors office will help you (hopefully) narrow in on when you need to schedule a fill. This is very important. The band won't work for you if it is not filled to the proper amount. Keep up the great work with the running! :)

Good luck on your journey,

Keep in mind too that if your calorie intake is too low, your body thinks you're starving it, so it holds onto everything - including the pounds. Journal everything you eat so you have a clue of what goes in, and then boost your Protein and calories a bit by adding a Protein shake or whatever, and see if it doesn't make a difference. Reducing carbs also helps, because increased carb consumption can slow or even stop your weight loss.

Good luck!

Dave

I wouldn't call your weight loss slow if averaged over the last 3 months since you have had surgery it equals around 6 pounds a month. It probably seems that way because it may be a week or two were you lose nothing but your avg is actually great!

I never go by the scale I always go according to how my clothes fit becuase yes weight on the scale is important but to me my clothes getting too big is more important. As long as the #'s on the scale are going down and not up you are on the right track.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
