I’m in so much pain! Is this normal??!! I was just cleared to get off my liquid diet yesterday and every time I eat (I think eating triggers this pain…I’m not sure) I get the worst sharp SHARP! pain in my ribs (the pain is on my side of my port). Every time I take a breath in it feels like the pain will make me cry!

Is this gas? Is this food getting stuck? Is my band slipping? What is going on … I talked to my doc and he said food should help … I think he is so so wrong! Has this happened to anyone!?

Hi. I am sure those who had issues with pain will chime in. I just wanted to tell you that it will get better!!

I know I used a heating pad on my abdomen near the port site---it help relax the muscles and it felt better.

As far as a slip, I have always been told that you will most likely have vomiting and be unable to get anything down.

I hope you feel better soon.

When you say that taking a breath makes you have pain - it makes me think it might be gas. I'm sure others will comment soon. If it is gas, keep moving and walking around.

When in doubt go to your Dr and ask them to look at your band and port under flouroscopy to make sure everything is okay. If you don't, and something is wrong, you'll never forgive yourself. If you do, and nothing is wrong, at least you know and you'll have a baseline image to use for how your band should work.

It's an x-ray. I think it refers to the Barium swallow. I'd check with your doctor for peace of mind. Then, walk, walk, walk. This is my third laproscopic surgery, and walking is the only thing that helps move the gas out!

I hope you feel better soon.

Keep us posted.

You can tell I'm new at this! But I have to ask what is a "flouroscopy"??

I was banded on Friday and believe me when i say i feel your pain!! For me, it has been gas pain and i have tried gas x strips but they didn't really help. I have walked around my apt moving my arms up and down and doing the twist as i walk to try to get the gas out but I think only time brings relief. I took an epson salt bath yesterday and right afterwards felt better but gas pain came back. I got some gas x chewables and after some farting and finally being able to poop (sorry, I know, it's gross, but sooo necessary!) I finally feel better. Does the pain go from your ribs to your back and upper shoulders? That what my gas pains do :( Also, I was told by the nurse to make sure to do the breathing exercises to get all the anastesia out of my lungs and that should help me feel back to normal and avoid pnuemonia. I hope it passes for you soon,

I was banded on Thursday, and had the pains you described right up until yesterday. It may just take time. What are you eating? I have been living on cottage cheese and Protein shakes. You aren't eating solids are you?

Please go see your doctor, and if you don't get satisfaction, get another opinion.

Try to relax. Do you have Gas X? You can chew 4 at a time, twice a day. I did--sometimes more. They helped. Everyday I get better. I'm afraid to give any advice--you have to be your own health advocate and make your doctor earn all that money he made off your surgery ;-)

Walking makes it worse! Oh man this really bites the big one!!

Well I'm 12 days into it and I'm just now feeling a little better. I had a pain in my rib and my upper left shoulder that every time I eat or breath it hurt. I just figured it was because I was eating to fast or to much or gas. It hurt like heck!!! So far the rib has let up but almost every time I eat anything the sharp paid in my shoulder comes a knocking. I know this don't help much but this is just my experience. I used gas x strips and walked. One would think the stomach would hurt not the shoulder when you eat????. Like the other person said just talk to your doctor they see all kinds of stuff. Hang in there !!!

Someone else posted a similar problem to yours and in the end she went to the ER and it was a good think because she had and embuli which is treated with blood thinners. Get yourself checked out the gas pain we all refer to is in the shoulder and abdomen. It does not hurt by moving more. Are you having any shortness of breath? Be an advocate for yourself and see a doctor or call your doctor over the phone sometimes doctors can ask certain questions and can ascertain if you are in any danger. Good luck and I hope you feel better.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
