Lap Band 1/17/11 Male 300pds

Recommended Posts

First of all I am 41 yr old male in Middle TN. I have struggled with weight my whole life. I decided to get the surgery when I tipped 300 pds. Today (Day 1) after surgery I feel like I am dying. They repaired a hernia and sent me home on my way. First, I had a real hard time pee'ing that has gotten a bit better. Then I sipped some Water and it went down fine. Next, I drank a chocolate Adkins shake. Ever since, I have been in pain. I had the typical Left Shoulder pain that is associated with "Gas/Air" in the cavity of the body from surgery. Now I am having a stuck/plugged feeling. I mean it doesn't matter if I drink a sip of broth or lick the spoon. I have sharp pains in the center of my back as if being stabbed. I do not throw up but I burp up this excess of foam. as soon as something goes down...up comes the foam. If I work the foam out, the pressure on my back goes away. I have barely been able to get my anti-biotic, pain meds, liquid ibuprofen down. I have used a hot Tylenol wrap for my shoulder. If I belch up the foam then I feel relieved. But even the slightest small sip of water brings on the whole episode of pain again. I called Dr. Morton's office today and I will go tomorrow to see if he can remove any air that might be inside. Is this common? I am really up for the experience but if it is going to hurt all the time, I'm afraid I might have made the wrong choice. The only thing that I have rationalized in my mind is that maybe I have mucus that is blocking the hole. I try to drink hot things to break it up, but it hasn't worked. Anyway, I hope Day 2 is better.

I spent three days post op in the hospital because of this pain. Everytime I got it I would have dry heeves. It will get better but still see your doctor just in case. I know you must be scared but it will get better. I would just take the pain meds and rest your stomach. You should have only been on Clear Liquids today and no shakes yet. Just take your meds and rest your stomach it will get better and make sure you keep your appointment. tomorrow. Take care and good luck

Hey Jamey - i think a lot of people question the surgery days after. It will get better! I didn't have it easy like a lot that I read on here. I wasn't up cleaning my house the next day or anything lol. But I allowed myself to heal and slowly started doing cardio a week out. I go to the same surgery center as you and while Dr. Morton isn't my doctor - i can tell you that I think everyone at that office is wonderful. They will take care of you and after you heal you will feel great about taking the steps to a healthier life. Good luck in your journey!

Thanks for the encouragement. I was seriously doubting yesterday, but woke up today and feel much better. I have actually drank 3/4 of a bottle of PowerAid Zero. I hope it gets better. I plan on working out, beginning next week. Right now my stomach is sore and I want to rest a bit. A friend picked me up and took me to ON TARGET to shoot our pistols today. It kept my mind off my surgery for awhile. If it keeps getting better everyday, then, I believe it is for the best. It was just scary thinking I couldn't even drink! I do miss being able to chug Water. It will be hard for me to get used to "sipping." lol, but I guess it is just part of the plan. Thanks for giving me a heads up check. I needed it.

Hang in there. Your reaction sounds like you're having difficulty due to swelling. As long as you can drink liquids, I wouldn't worry. It will get better. You might notice the same reaction after your fills. As my doctor said, be kind to your band.

As for the sipping, yeah well they say to sip but by a month postop, I was back to chugging my Water without a problem. Even now, at my sweet spot, I can still drink as I did preop...most days. Occasionally, I'll find myself spewing Water out through my nose or mouth as it goes down and rebounds.

I have a feeling that your doctor may have put Fluid in your band at the time of surgery. It seems like many people I read about that have this foam issue or pain when drinking Protein shakes end up finding out there is Fluid in the band and go for an adjustment to remove the saline. Do you know if there is fill in your band?

I hope it gets better and that your doctor can give you some relief.

Well, I was almost the same start point as yourself, 41yo@296#. I know it is different for everyone, but it has been a great decision on my part.

Right after surgery I was a bit tender for about two weeks, but I was doing all my normal activities almost from the second day. I did put off serious workouts for about a month. Since then I have been mountain biking (average 50 miles a week now) and some gym time each week.

It is now a little over 3 months post op, and I am 249#. I have had two fills, don't know how much, but each time things were extra tight for about a week afterward. I believe I am at a great spot right now.

Honestly, I have had more complications from dental work. I have gotten quite good at predicting when to stop before I have an issue, but I still over do it about once a week on something and have to cough it back up.

I wish you luck!

Cheers, Erick

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
