Suggestions for Pre & Post Op liquid Diet

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am set to start my liquid pre op diet either this Thursday or Next Thursday and i have my list of approved items that my dietician gave me for the two weeks of fasting. Only thing is that i have not had hardly any of these items in the past so i have no idea how good or gross they are. Do any of you remember what you preffered during your fasting session? I have heard good things about the Protein Shakes and that sounds like my best bet because i have taken plaenty of those before in the past. I am just curious if there is something that i can have that a lot of other people have enjoyed to make those two weeks seem less miserable.

Thanks!!

Nick

I am on day 4 and I find Protein Shakes gross. However, they stop the hunger so I guzzle them down and then eat something just after. I love my cottage cheese and yogurt and would probably be suffering more if I couldn't have those. The Carnation Instant Breakfast (sugar free, blue box) is very good, like chocolate milk, but doesn't control the hunger as long as the Protein shakes do. So when the hunger gets bad and I'm tempted to cheat (I haven't yet!!) then I guzzle down one of those awful protein shakes and wait for 20 min. So far this is working well for me as I haven't even really been tempted by the food. It's not nearly as hard as I was expecting it to be.

I did a lot of low sodium broth and cream of chicken Soup, though I got sick of it easily. I mustered up my strength to drink my Protein Shakes though I hated the smell and taste. If Protein shakes don't bother you look around for some Protein Shake recipes, there are some great ones out there! Torani sugar free Syrup is a great way to add some extra flavor to them.

Nowadays as I workout more I need more protein so I've been drinking RTD protein shakes. My favorite at muscle milk light and labrada lean body on the go. Both are low carb, low sugar, and high in protein.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
