I messed up on pre-op!

Recommended Posts

This is day 5 of my Optifast shakes. Nothing elese other than crystal lite Water and suger free no carbonated drinks. I walked into my mom house went in the kitchen to see what she cooked and grabed a piece of chicken before i realized what i was doing. Usually i keep my mind right about this but i really wasnt thinking when i went in her kitchen. I ate probally 3 bits of it. i knew after the first bit but didnt stop until my daughter walked in and said "MOMA!" I fell like such a loser. This surgery is way to important to me to mess up again. (The chicken dont even fell right sitting in my stomach). Should i call the Dr. office and rat myself out??? Have anyone elese slipped??? I promiss it wont happen again........

3 bites isn't going to kill you. That's not a big deal.

My doctor even let me have Thanksgiving dinner before my surgery. I wouldn't worry about it.

I did a two week liquid diet before my surgery and the day of my surgery I had a really bad cold and I was sent home from the hospital. I called the Dr.'s office the next day to reschedule my surgery and they told me to stop the liquid diet and to eat healthy for the next two weeks. I ate regular food up to the day before the surgery and the results were the same.

Don't overstress about the liquid diet, it is a good practice for what will come after the surgery!

Chicabanded I am so glad to hear you say that about Pre Op diet....I am good all day long but right about 8pm I lose all my senses and have to have a bite of something, usually its at least Protein but I feel so guilty and i am afraid I will not make it for surgery. Plus everyone in my house right now is sick with a cold and I won't touch any of them....I am being banded on the 28th...

Forgive yourself and tell us in detail what it tasted like!!!!! Lol My preop diet includes a Protein meal a baked chicken only dry spices or lean meats like sirloin So I am sure its not going to mess you up. The idea of the diet is to make you get use to liquids so that once you have surgery you wont be tempted to grab a hamburger and try to eat it and hurt yourself. It is also to reduce your liver size... you do that by following a low carb low calorie low sugar High Protein diet.... One piece of chicken is not going to hurt you my diet includes that everyday thankfully unless it was fried then I want details lol... The point is not to slip ever day... then your body will not go into the fasting stage and burn your reserves <The fat on the liver there by shrinking it> thats where the low carbs come in.... you burn carbs for energy if you have low carb diet it comes from the reserves... Hope that makes sense... Best practice follow your MD's diet forgive yourself for falling off the wagon today and jump on the nearest stage heading west tomorrow :)~

dont beat yourself up! you're gonna cheat here and there. we are human. we are addicted to food or we wouldnt be doing this. just dont be maxing out credit cards at mcdonalds and you'll be fine. lol.

this will make you feel better...

the night before my surgery i had my favorite dinner... steak with mashed potatoes and corn on the cob.

you'll live! just stay positive. its hard i know. good luck love.:D

Strange advice in this thread. Please follow your doctor's orders. And please don't substitute feel good advice from people who are not lap band surgeons for your doctor's prescribed plan. Sure, every doctor is different re: the preop diet, but just do what your doc says. Maybe some of the people on this forum who didn't get their band the first time around because they didn't follow preop diet instructions will chime in. Anyways, 3 bites of chicken isn't going to sabotage you, but just do what you're doctor has told you to do.

The Good thing is you realize your mistake that is step number 1. Next time just look at the piece of chicken and say “BAD chicken NO… NO… NO…” LOL. Don’t beat yourself up that will lead to other bad habits. Stay focused and good luck.

Thanks every one for the support getting me back on track but yes I'm gonna follow Dr. orders. My mind is back on track. I get so jealous when I hear people say the can have broth Jello or even one meal of lean meat...lol. But orders say Optifast shacks only so I'm gonna follow it(praying ). This to shall pass. Better get my mind right now because a slip like that after surgery would be real bad with a fresh band..... (But just to vent, these shakes have more carbs and suger than I was eating on the diet the Nut.had me on. 20 carbs 17 sugers in one container...just had to get that out..lol)

No worries; at least you stopped! I had a few slip ups on the pre surgery diet. I would, however, recommend trying to be good at least the day before. My dr's office was more concerned about that as all liquids will decrease your risk of nausea after surgery. I also think it helped mentally prepare me (somewhat) for life with the band. I was kinda depressed the first few days that food had become totally unappealing but then thought to myself "it's no worse than the last 2 weeks, lol" and was able to get over it. Do the best you can, and remember WHY you're doing this and you'll be fine! :D

My husband and I where both banded a week apart. I had mine done first and I started the liquids the week of Christmas so I did cheat those 2 days only. I lost 14lbs before surgery. The day of my surgery my husband expressed that the liquid diet sucks. So the Dr. said you can cheat a little, no cheese burgers! Well don't tell a man that because for the next week he eat tuna sandwiches with mayo and cream of chicken Soup everyday. I told him he better do the 2 day liquids before surgery and he did. Things where fine the Dr. never mention anything about his liver being to large. However that being said he did not lose as many lbs as I did. Hang in there you can do it!!!! I'm down 21lbs now and looking forward to reaching my goal. Good Luck!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
