So, I got my rite of passage today as a bandster. I had my first stuck episode. I kept saying I needed to learn my lesson so today I did. I had a craving for Chinese food so I got a small order to go, got it home, took a few bites and felt it. It was a NASTY experience, one I don't care to repeat. My craving for Chinese food is gone now!!

Anyways, I was wondering if there is a post stuck diet requirement. Do you return to liquids/purees following this? I have no interest in eating at the moment (since it literally just occurred a few hours ago), but would like to know what I'm suppose to do tomorrow.

Thanks for your help/advice.

I am in no means a qualified medical professional but I'll be glad to share with you my limited knowledge. After my first stuck episode (it was chicken that was just a little too dry) I was so scared to actually eat again. I spoke to the nurse at my dr's office and she suggested taking it easy for a few days. I stuck to liquids and mostly soft foods for a few days (3-4) to give my stomach a chance to heal. She mentioned that when you get stuck based on the severity there may be a bit of swelling or irritation inside the band. By the end of the week I was good to go and much more particular about what I ate and how long I chewed it. Lesson learned for sure! Have only been stuck once more in the 3 years I've been banded. This was just my experience and as we all know everybody is different. If you're not sure a call to your dr. might not be a bad idea. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. I took it easy today and limited my intake. I feel alot better than last night, not 100% yet, but much better!

I definitely learned my leason. I think the chicken was also too dry as well, but I wanted to eat it anyways.... lesson learned that is for sure!!

I have not had a fill yet and I just had a "stuck" food problem. I wanted to try a tiny home made cheeseburger w/ cooked onions. 1st bite and I was done...I have had ground beef, cheese and cooked onions with NO problem so... It must have been the white bread bun! It wasnt as bad as I thought it would be but I put off dinner for a couple hours and only had Soup then. I am back off bread.

What exactly does being 'stuck' feel like? Do you feel it in your stomach? Most of the time I am fine, but since my last fill every now and then when i eat i feel like the food gets stuck going down and i feel it in my chest and it is painful but usually goes away in a minute or two. Is that getting stuck? I have never thrown up or been uncomfortable for more than a couple of minutes....

What I call being "stuck" is a uncomfortable feeling in my chest, it felt like I couldnt finish swallowing. I drank a little milk after a few minutes and I felt better. Theres no other way I can describe it but uncomfortable

When I had my first "stuck" episode it was in my chest. It was very painful. I wanted to drink but actually discovered that burping helped a little - no throwing up any food just "sliming." It happened to me because I was not chewing enough or took too big a bite - lesson learned. No thank you

A lot of people go back to liquids for awhile. I usually don't eat anything solid until dinner (my band is too tight for solids until 6 or 7 pm), so I essentially do liquids for 24 hours or so, and that usually remedies any irritation that may have occurred.

I'm recovering now from what my doctor believes is a stuck episode. My pain started in my side then seemed to spread across my whole stomach. Although the worst has passed, I still have a slight tightness in the upper abdomen. I've suffered from Irritable Bowel Syndrome for years, and since I've been terribly constipated since my banding (Dec. 30), I think it may have been a combo stuck-episode/IBS flare.

In any case, my surgeon said definitely go on liquids for a couple of days to let things settle. That seems to be helping.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I appreciate it.

My "stuck" episode was pain in the chest, followed by slimming and then some throw up. This the 1st time I had this happen. I didn't really think that it would ever happen to me, but it did! I don't care to repeat it again right away I do know that!

I appreciate all of the support we have on here.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
