hi everyone,

this is my first post i am finishing the first week of my pre op diet and am scheduled for surgery 1/24

i have a few questions i was hoping some people could help me out with,

first of all, after 6 days with no cheating except not measuring exactly 2 cups of veggies, i had a salad for lunch and veggie Soup for supper, but otherwise only 3 shakes and 1 Meal Replacement bar, and i only lost

4 lbs., i thought people lose like 10 lbs. in a week, it's very frustrating to me.

also, i was wondering what people switch metformin to, i am taking the long acting so i can't crush it, do people just switch to the regular and crush it or take the liquid?

I've lost 8 pounds In eight days, But Ive stuck to the two cups of veggies. But Im taking 5 of the shake. They told me that liquid vitmans are better. Because it gets into your system faster. You really have to stick to the deit. My surgery Is jan 20th. I wish you luck and my prayers are with you

i'm allowed 5 shakes but i usually only have 4 because i really don't like them but having less shouldn't make me lose less, should it?

I had been on my own diet for several months; when my doctor said if you do this medical liquid diet you'll loose 1 pounds a day. Well I spent over $200 on it and I did not loose any weight in 5 days. This was on 500 cal. a day and doing an hour of vigorous cardio dailey, and I weighed 310 pounds! I went back to the nurse and she agreed I should go back on my own diet. Oh and I think I was alergic to the shakes they made the back of my throat numb. Which is classic sympton for food allergies (my brother has life threatening food allergies so I know all about those.). So yes it is possible to be on a strict liquid diet and not loose weight. I am NOT saying to take things into your own hands. Always speak with your doctor regarding concerns.

Of course if you are not getting enough calories your body goes into starvation mode and stores all of you fat instead of burning it. I only lost 7 pounds on the preop diet in 2 weeks so dont feel bad.

Regarding Metformin, if you are using the generic you can cut it in half and as long as those halves are smaller than a normal size aspirin / m&m then you can take them like normal. Apparentlynit helps to take it with milk or food. But it has to be the normal Metformin and not the Extended Release. There are also mentions of using liquid Riomet instead, which is just liquid Metformin.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
