Allergic to Gluten??

Recommended Posts

I was reading on another thread where a poster said that they were allergic to gluten and by cutting gluten out of their diet they felt better no more sluggishness and were able to lose more weight.

Just what is Gluten and what does it do to a person who is allergic to it?

I'm gonna do a google search for it but would like some input from my friends here at LBT who have experience with it and if they are allergic.

Thanks So Much...Zen

my oldest son is allergic to gluten. To put it simply, gluten is a Protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. Some signs of a reaction include:

  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Anemia
  • Distended abdomen
  • Bone pain
  • Joint pain
  • Fatigue
  • Vitamin deficiencies
  • Mineral deficiencies
  • Delayed growth in children
  • Failure to thrive in infants
  • Tooth abnormalities
  • Migraines

Recognizing grains that contain gluten is the easy part. Wheat, barley, and rye are all off-limits. Experts in the United States feel oats should also be forbidden due to dangers of cross-contamination. That means the following items are usually sources of gluten (the exception would be specially-made gluten-free versions):

  • Bagels
  • Biscuits
  • Bread
  • Bread crumbs
  • Breaded fish
  • Breaded meats or poultry
  • Bread pudding
  • Cake
  • Cereal
  • chicken nuggets
  • Croissants
  • Cookies
  • Crackers
  • Croutons
  • Doughnuts
  • Dumplings
  • Flour
  • Flour tortillas
  • Fried vegetables
  • Graham crackers
  • Hamburger buns
  • Hotdog buns
  • Ice cream cones
  • macaroni
  • Melba toast
  • Muffins
  • Noodles
  • pancakes
  • Pasta
  • Pastries
  • Pie crusts
  • pizza crust
  • pretzels
  • Rolls
  • Spaghetti
  • Stuffing
  • Tabbouleh
  • Waffles

Zen,

Supposedly testing has ruled out any allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten for me but, on the advice of a friend, I recently gave up both. For as long as I can remember (and it's getting worse as I get older) I've dealt with fatigue, irritability, brain fog, general muscle aches and pains, etc. Various doctors reached the point of diagnosing chronic fatigue syndrome (what they diagnose when they've ruled everything else out). My friend said this was her life exactly until she gave up wheat and gluten on the advice of one of her friends.

I was amazed at how great I began to feel within days! No more brain fog or fatigue and I'm now sleeping through the night (something I haven't done in many decades) and waking rested!

.

I know that when I go on a yest and gluten aversion diet, I feel soooooooooo much better. I don't have an allergy, but because of many years of eating yeast heavy foods and numerous courses of anti-biotics; I tend to develop a yeast overgrowth in my system. You'd be amazed at how quickly you feel better.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
