Still hate my band

I have posted on here that I hate the band, it does not work, that I have failed, etc. I had some Fluid taken out last april due to too much pbing. heartburn, etc. i was too tight. i was banded 6/07. went from 304 to 217 as of last april. did good first year fair 2nd year 3rd year i really gave up. i went back to eating whatever i wanted. grazing all day, bored eating etc. have gained several, several lbs. and i have to say i really thought that i had stretched my stomach cause i could eat anything and how much i wanted as long as i had my drink to wash it down. as of jan. 16 of this year which is a week ago today. i said enough, everyone is telling me they can tell i have gained weight, tired of looking at the pics of all my friends that did lose it within the first 18 to 24 months. i started eating right again, cut out all my chips, Cookies, icecream, fried foods, homemade cornbread, homemade rolls, etc. no i am not drinking 64 oz Water today just hard to do but i am drinking some water, coffee, tea. i just wanted to see so i did not drink 30 min prior or during eat time. oh yea first day thought no i messed it up. 2nd day thru now, oh yea. back to tight. i am gonna give it my best this time because i know me. i have lost 100 gained 100 many times. i know that if i had not had the band i would be back up to 304. it is hard it sucks that ppl like us cannot eat cookies and chips and ice cream like the thin ppl. it sucks that we will have to eat less calories, carbs, etc. for the rest of our lives. it sucks that my every waking moment is consumed by wanting to be thin. it sucks that i ?? why could i not be one of those ppl that can't eat, enjoy life being normal and not really worry about weight. BUT, I AM NOT. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THE FAT GIRL. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THE BUTT OF THE FAT JOKES. So I wish you luck, I pray that you find your way. I am on this journey called life and all i can do is try. But I have to admit, sorta proud of myself this week for sticking with it. i have lost 7 lbs. i know water is prob. most of it but it sure feels good to look down and see the scale go down. Dang I hate being fat and I know anyone who has this problem does to.

Want to be thin: Why don't you get back on track in small doses instead of trying to do it all at once which might seem overwhelming and setting you up for failure. First, get rid of all the Cookies, cakes, rolls, etc..all the food that we shouldn't be eating and replace it with:

bread - lite whole wheat (toasted)

milk - skim

lunch meat - lite (low fat)

use mustard instead of mayo

make a half of sandwich with this.

fruit - buy those no sugar added 1/2 cups of peaches, pears,mixed fruit, etc..

veggies - get canned, fresh or frozen.

butter - use I can't believe it's not butter spray.

carbs - make them complex - like a high Fiber Cereal, oatmeal

eggs - use egg beaters

buy a rotissiere chicken (if available) and remove skin, chop it up and add some fat free chicken gravy.

get some rice cakes (35 cal/each) and spray them with some I can't believe and then sprinkle a mixture of splenda and cinnamon on them.

salads - use lite balsamic vinegarette - Newman's makes a good one.

baked potatoes - get those microwave ready one. A baked potato now and then isn't going to kill you.

There are some 100 calorie Protein Bars that are good.

sugar free Jello - 10 calorie

sugar free pudding - 60 calories

This should give you a good start and provide you with enough food choices.

At first just do the replacements of the unhealthy food with the healthy. Then after about a week or so, start keeping a food journal and measuring and weighing the food and decide on a calorie level (like 1500 to start and them lower over time).

Start exercising a little each day if you haven't. Just walk or if you have a treadmill, do that. Then you can increase it as time goes on. I do the Richard Simmons Sweatin to the Oldies. My adult son makes fun of it, but it's the music I grew up with so it's fun.

You also need to see your doctor again and visit with the nutritionist. I am not going to tell you the band works for everyone because it doesn't work for me by reducing hunger and providing satiety, but I do what I can to keep the weight off. It is a constant battle and it is for life and no, it's not fair. I was the thin girl for the first part of my life and now I'm not. So don't worry about being seen as the fat girl. What others think isn't important. It's what you think.

Think about getting healthy instead of getting thin. Some of us aren't made to be thin, But we should try to be healthy. Good luck.

Guys here I am. Today 240. I am down 9 lbs. Yeah Baby. I have the mindset to do this. I am gonna do this. I do not want to fail. My band does work. I am back tight. Cannot not eat but 1/2 piece baked fish tonight and about 3-4 bites of rice. and Yes the rice got stuck so I excused myself to the bathroom. Sat backdown and finished the 1/2 fish and now I am satisfied. My hubby is sitting over there on the couch right now eating a nutty bar (LOL) and it does not bother me one bit. He is thin and honestly if he did not eat what he ate he would be a skeleton. Oh well, I am on my way, and excited. We can do this.

No, you read it into it.

wow, this is quite a "hot" topic on whether the band works or not. I am living proof that with some hard work and SELF CONTROL of my eating habits, the band works even at my age of 58. I am down 90 pds from being banded on 12/20/08 and at first I felt just like fluffy that this is the worst decision of my life...but after the first few months of depression on "what on earth did I do to myself", I resigned myself to get down and get to work on this battle of the weight that I have had for over 40 years. I do believe it is not for everyone, but so many people go into this band surgery thing thinking that this is a miracle cure and you just sit back and it happens. WRONG, this takes a lot of work and perserverance on watching your calories and getting exercise everyday. I am not a gym person, so I made up my mind that I would only do exercise that can be done forever, not just during the weight loss. I walk every chance I get at least twice a day at break time at work and do whatever yardwork I can at home on weekends. Keeping active is the other key besides counting calories that make the difference in this journey. I am telling you now, gastric might work at first, but I have a nephew that is steadily gaining his weight back after 4 years because he is stretching his stomach out again, so if you are looking for no control over your food, that surgery is not going to work either over the long haul. I am sorry, but I am a firm believer in the band and it literally saved my life, good luck on whatever you choose to do with your band.

Good post Cleo's Mom. This is actually about how I went about things pre-op and post-op (once past the healing phase). I was not put on a pre-op diet so I wasn't weaned off the white carbs.. I did it slowly and it wasn't difficult because I was gentle with myself. I didn't use exactly the things you list, but close enough.

Wow, many here are more busy arguing with other things people said instead of ansering the question. The topic starter should *start* by reading the dietary information. lots of it. You have the Band, try it before you pull it. I have not had surgery, I am considering the Band or the Sleeve. All the "working" makes me nervous, as the work i've done this far hasn't worked. Maybe the poster needs to consider the Sleeve IF this doesn't work out, give it 6 months, a year.. I'd NEVEr do a Bypass or anything that messes up my intestines-I'd rather stay fat! It does suck to get this surgery, think that you won't be hungry and will be able to lose weight. It seems a lot of a tool (in the bad and good sense of the word). Try to learn what you can as long as you can stand it..and ignore all the people's 'political' discussions!

You're Kidding, right?

Tell that to the hundreds of thousands of people for whom the Bypass has changed their lives dramatically, for the better.

If you have decided to have WLS, be open to ALL the procedures. ONE of them will be better for you. But don't rule out anything.

If you limit yourself like that, it's unlikely you be successful with any WLS. It requires an open mind.

I have to agree. I've done lots of research and came to the same conclusion. There are worse things than being fat. I belong to another forum that is mainly bypass patients and they have the same problems band patients do. Some do well...many do not. Even the experts in the WLS recognize that the vast majority of bypass patients never lose more than 50% or so of their weight (what they normally lose as a result of malabsorption) but they deem this a success anyway. Many gain their weight back and then some. Some hit their goal weight and continue to lose...and not because they want to. I now know 5 people who've died in this manner over the last 3 years.

Ask a surgeon why he recommends bypass for someone who failed the band and he'll tell you it's because bypass is more 'successful'...but their success rate is not based on people who reach their ideal weight...or even on people who lose a specific percentage of weight and keep it off. It's based on people losing at least 50% of their weight...which bypass patients typically do in the first year or so, but there is no follow-up to see if they keep it off.

The reality is that the VS and band both have a honeymoon phase. After that phase, if the person does not 'work' that WLS, they will gain the weight right back...only now they've made major revisions to their insides which sets up its own set of complications (more so in bypass).

I have not had to "work" at it. I have lost 109 pounds with very little effort on my part. But, I am one of the lucky ones that the band works for like it should. This is the easiest weightloss of my life. Over the years I have tried every diet you can think of and they were all much more "work" than this has been for me.

I don't have hunger issues. The problem is that you really don't know if you will be one of the lucky ones that does not have to put in a great deal of work until you get the band and follow up with adjustments/fills. The sleeve is pretty drastic too. They do remove most of your stomach.

think that the way fluffy took the post was as if elfie had said "well why do you THINK it didn't work for you" as if she was saying she didn't actually know if her band wasn't working for her.

The way that she had actually mean the post was "why do YOU think the band didn't work for you" maybe it was just her way of trying to be supportive and figure out what it was that was causing her problems.

It doesn't matter the direction the thread has taken or what people say in response to other's posts. If you go back and read, you may come to the conclusion, as I have, that the OP does not want help with the band and how it works.

      Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

      2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

        I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

        I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

        Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
