Did not expect this much pain post op.

Recommended Posts

Just got banded on Jan 11th. Coming out of the OR when they woke me up, I remember screaming that my belly had been ripped open. OMG. The pain was so intense. So intense that I got naseous. Wow. Didn't expect that at all. Took about 2 hours to get my pain down to a 4. I normally have a very high threshold for pain so this was unusual. After being loaded up on a bunch of various drugs the hospital sent me home 5 hours after the procedure.

The first night home was a nightmare. I couldn't sit up or get out of bed- because again I felt like I was being sawed in half. Then the dry heaves started, I don't know how I survived that first night. The past few days have gotten better but I'm still having so much pain and nausea. I've spoken to my surgeon everyday since the surgery and he is very perplexed. I don't have a fever or any signs of infections.

Anyone else have a similiar experience? One great thing is I have lost 14 pounds since last Sunday!

I had a similiar experience when I came home from the hospital. I was banded on 12.23.10 and on my first night I ended up being put back in the hospital for two extra days. My surgeon had no explaination for my dry heaves, nausea or pain. I have a very low tolorance so I was taking liquid vicodin as often as I could. Now I am much better but I am experiencing burping gas after I eat or drink. I am taking small sips like they suggested but nothing has changed. At my first doctor visit I was down 10 lbs. I don't have a scale at home or I am sure I would be on it everyday. Hope you feel better soon!

Wow! I really feel for you guys having had this bad experience. I'm really thankful my surgery and post-op pain was relatively easy. I think it is so hard to predict how much pain will be felt by each individual after surgery. I always thought I had a low threshold for pain (I put band-aids on paper cuts). I only needed the pain meds for one day after surgery.

I DO know it get better every day. I hope you guys speed through your post-op and that your pain decreases fast.

Best wishes,

I too had an issue with the pain post operatively. I have a very high pain tolerance.....I have had many surgeries and severe injuries, so I am no stanger to it all......

My doctor thinks that maybe a nerve was trapped when the port was sutured in place and that was causing the pain that I had---mine was all in the port area and was burning/searing pain.

The one thing I can tell you is that it got better........it took several days for the pain to settle down to a tolerable level......so rest, take your pain meds, stay hydrated....it will get better....

I had alot of pain as well, and alot of nausea. Reflecting back, I think the nausea was a combination of the after-effects of the anesthesia and the morphine. The other pain reliever didn't cause 1/2 the nausea that I would get from the morphine.

The pain was more gas pain that actual pain from the surgery. Trust me, it can be hard to differentiate. For some the gas pain is localized to the shoulders and back. For others (like) me it can be all over or mostly in the abdomine. AFter about a week, most of it had subsided. It took several weeks before I could sleep even slightly comfortably. Nearly a month before I felt "back to normal" - at least comfort wise.

All this to say, the first week can be very hard for some people. Thats not necessarily unusual. However, you know your body better than anyone else. If it seems WAY bad you should be in touch with your doc immediately.

I'm so sorry to hear about your pain level. As someone has already said, everyone is different. I had my surgery 18 mos ago. I had more trouble with gas pains than actual surgery pain. I was sent home with meds for pain, nausea, and gas discomfort. I didn't use the pain or nausea meds but I sure used the gas-X strips. Walking helps the pain & gas. I lost 17 lbs in four days and to date I've lost 90 lbs. Just hang in there, it gets better.

The post-op pain/nausea can also be affected by what kind of pain meds you are given. Many are given liquid vicodin. Good stuff, but can cause nausea in those who are sensitive to it.

My post-op pain was not well controlled because I was given only Darvocet!! NEVER again will I let someone cut into my abdomen with only Darvocet as post-op medication. I tried to tell the NP that Darvocet would not be enough at my pre-op appt. She assured me it would be.. I was right, she was wrong. I got through it, but was not a happy camper and let her know it at my 2 week visit. And that was stupid of me. I should've called and insisted on better pain coverage from the get-go.

Call your surgeon if you don't have adequate pain control.

Hope you feel better soon.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
