New to Forum-Introducing myself

Recommended Posts

Hi all- My name is karen and I have been overweight my whole life. My current BMI is 37-38, but I have co-morbid conditions such as high blood pressure, sleep apnea. I am determined to lose the weight and want to use a band to help myself achieve my goal. I want to be close to a normal BMI or even be at a normal. It would mean slimming down from 246 to 165. I already started to use the diet my doctor's office gave me (lotsa Protein, low low carbs, low fat, low calorie in general). My doctor is in Middletown NY at Tri State Bariatrics and his name is Dr. Peter Kwon. I get to meet him in two weeks (so far I went to the seminar, dietitian, nurse practitioner, bariatric nurse, and insurance specialist. I am very impressed with this practice; I have confidence they can help me help myself.

I would be interested in getting to know people here at the forum- pre-op and post-op alike. If anyone has used Tri-State Bariatrics in my area please reply or message me. I would like to hear a bit about your experiences, as well as anyone's experience with getting ready for or having the band.

I hope to make new friends here and that I will find time to post and reply. (Sometimes it takes me awhile to reply since my internet time is sporadic).

Glad to be here and glad to be taking a pro-active role in my health care and concerns.

if anyone wants to chat with me at yahoo messenger my ID is kheilker. just mention banding and we can talk! I also have Facebook under Karen Roberta Heilker.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
