Suggestions Please --- PCP won't help with 6 mth diet

Recommended Posts

Can anyone offer any suggestions? My PCP suggested I look into WLS 8 months ago. I did the research, went to meetings, and spoke with everyone that I could find. I decided that the Lap Band was what I really wanted and needed to do. When I went back to my pcp for my bi-annual BP check I brought up the topic of WLS and what I had found. She was all for it if this was what I wanted. However, she will not help me on my journey. My PCP says that her office only deals with one weight loss group in my area of NC. I met with that group when I did my original research and did not care for the surgeon or the office staff.

My insurance requires that I have 6 months of a structured diet supervised by my PCP and a dietician. My PCP will not supervise this diet because I did not choose her affiliated surgeon. She will provide any records that are required but not the supervision that I need. Now what do I do? I found a surgeon whom I truly like and like the program his office offers. But I have to have this supervision required by my insurance. They will not budge. I called and spoke with them explaining the situation. They did wish me good luck! I am very frustrated... I felt sooooo good about my decision but now...

Thanks for any suggestions :(

I think you should ask the surgeon if he can refer you to a Pcp. Who will help you with the six month process.

I'm with PP..ask the surgeon that you want if there is someone that he works with. That's really strange coming from a doctor, they are sippose to help with your health and make suggestions, but the choice is totally yours! Good luck!

It's not that my PCP wouldn't do my 3 month diet, but the surgeon I chose required a specific diet so he did the monitoring of the diet with me. It was a bit more because my co-pays are higher for a specialist vs PCP but it worked out OK in the end.

Good luck!

BTW, I agree with what was suggested above. Get a new PCP. It doesn't sound like your health is hers/his main concern and it should be.

Your PCP sounds gross, and sounds like she clearly has worked out a deal with this other surgeon and his WLS program that financially benefits both of them. Since you are not interested in that program, she is not interested in you. Really gross. I would immediately find a new PCP.

For sure find a new PCP. Or, ask your PCP for a nutritionist referral then visit your PCP months for 6 months to discuss how your structured/supervised diet is going. At the end they HAVE TO PROVIDE all the records. You don't have to be affiliated with ANY surgeon to proceed with the required supervised diet. At the end of your diet, request records be sent to whatever surgeon you choose. Your PCP legally has to forward any requested records. Even do it in connection with the surgeon HE/SHE works with, but at the end switch surgeons.

I was able to see my surgeons office for the 6 month diet. He sent me to a nutritionist and then weighed me in once a month. That was all that I needed to fulfill my insurance requirement. Hope that helps. Karen

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
