Getting banded 2/11 - Lap Band vs. Realize Band

Recommended Posts

I just got my approval and am getting banded on 2/11....I have the option between the Lap Band and Realize Band. I have been doing some research and it seems as though many say the Realize Band is the way to go because more textures can be tolerated, however I have also heard that the Lap Band allows you to lose weight faster. Any insight would be appreciated!!! Thanks!

I think they are both equal. My doc uses the Realize band.

The biggest two benefits of the Realize band are: low profile port is the norm (1 cm high by 3 cm wide) and it stays low pressure whereas LapBand hits high pressure before it is half full. This is important because the fills are what keep you in your sweet spot and if your band is too high pressure the possibility of rupture, slippage, etc. Is greater. Also, the lap band has baffles like those air bubble strips used in packing, whereas the Realize band is one smooth silicone tube. One smooth tube is less stressful on your stomach tissue.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
