Tightness and Can't Burp

Recommended Posts

I am five days post op and have been experiencing a tightness in my lower chest / upper stomach where i assume my band to be placed. I have been on a clear liquid diet for the past four days (I now hate broth and the smell of powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury unflavored) and just had an Atkins premade Protein shake for the first time about 4 hours ago. I had about 8 oz and never experienced a full feeling while drinking it and did make a point to drink it slowly. I just have this feeling like i need to burp but cant. I go to burp and nothing comes out and i dont want to force it. It also feels like hunger pangs at times. I had the body gas from the surgery my first two days post op but nothing since then. The stomach gas has been happening since day 1 post op and I have had no problem "foofing" :P just burping. Also, Gas X is not working for the tightness and the inability to burp.

Has anyone else experienced this? Am i drinking to much at once?

My surgeon stated at least drinking 4 oz per hour but never stated i would have a max. I assume liquids such as shakes and Clear Liquids arent sitting in the pouch and are sliding through the opening fairly easily so this tightness isnt a to full pouch. <- With this in mind i still dont chug my drinks and am taking it slowly.

The tightness and not being able to burp is pretty normal. It all gets better with time. Hang in there and go slow.

I'm 5 weeks post-op and have yet to burp. blink.gif

The tightness in the chest does go away, the only time I feel it now is if I am full...or ate too fast.

It took a couple of months after surgery to muster up even the tiniest burp. I had that same feeling you are having now every time I drank or ate. I also got really nauseated for the week to ten days post op. No worries though,,, I am 71/2 months post op now... 50 pounds down and I can now muster up a much more impressive burp. Hang in there... one day at a time... it gets better and life is good!

Thanks for the replies every one! Each day it gets less noticeable and easier to burp. And when I do burp....it feels deliciously wonderful!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
