I almost NEVER get the hiccups (like, maybe one time every other year). Since my surgery yesterday I have been hiccuping like crazy! Has anyone else experienced this? Is this normal?

Yes, I did for the first 2 weeks. Not so much now, but sometimes! A lot of people here have posted that they get hiccups and burp more now!

Hiccups are my sign that I have eaten too much and better not have another bite!

Yes! Right after surgery, I hiccuped and burped a lot. Now, I might hiccup or burp if I drank or ate something too fast. Taking smaller sips and waiting a little longer in between MIGHT help (your stomach is mad at you right nowangry.gif), but you might just have to ride out this phase. It will get better!

Day 3 and now day 4 not so many hiccups just muscle cramping feeling around the incisions. Thankfully I have some muscle relaxers for my back so I am taking 1 every so often and that really helps.

I find that I hiccup if I've eaten too fast/much. Also if something is stuck, the hiccup helps to dislodge it. My understanding is that hiccuping in gneral has to do with eating something too fast. I never liked them.

Try eating slower. My doctor's office preaches chewing till it's liquid and then waiting 30 seconds after swallowing to take the next bite.

Good luck!

same here. I also find that I hiccup after i eat to much or too fast. I think it has something to do with our diaphragm in the area.. I burp if I drink too fast. Or sometimes when I wake up. Ohhhh I'm embaressed. But what can you do..

With my first band I never hiccuped or burped. With my second band things were ok will I was slightly overfilled. Then I would get hiccups if I ate too fast or when my stomach was full and I had to stop eating.

Now I am a little unfilled and I only get hiccups when I eat too fast. It is a good excuse for me when I am out eating because that gives me a reason to stop eating for a while.

Also, I think that they may touch the diaghram during surgery, which just causes a temoprary bout of spasms. I am sure I read that somewhere else during my initial research. Good luck...I hate the hiccups!

I was just banded on the 14th (4 days ago) and I get painful hiccups and a feeling like I have to burp but it doesn't happen. I am on liquids and today I have basically had nothing. Each time I take a sip, I get the pressure in the middle of my chest and it hurts. It takes forever for it to go away. I am not having a happy day today..ps I am hungry <_<

My wife just pointed out to me this evening that I seem to get the hiccups a lot in that past few weeks since being banded. I guess I sort of noticed but didn't think too much of it. I did notice that while I eat WAY less I still tend to eat fast. Maybe I just need to concentrate on slowing down.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
