Wow...I hope my post on this thread doesn't get lost amidst all the canadian posts...lol...

I'm still weighing all my options and googling like a crazy person to gather as much info on the lap band as I can so that I know exactly what I'm in for. I have a few calls in to doctors in Calgary, Alberta...trying to see how much trouble I will have getting in for fills if I go to Mexico for the surgery. Anyways...this site is great...I've been able to gather sooooo much info...it's been awesome and really inspiring...maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Nice to find someone from Canada!! I live in Calgary and am schedules for Lapband throught the Toronto Lapband Centre on Jan 26th (only 11 more sleeps). There is a Doctor through the Peter Lougheed Center in Calgary that does fills. THe cost is $100.

I only found out about Lapband in November (can't believe I have never found info. on it before) and am so looking forward to winning the battle of the buldge.

Hey there,

I'm in Calgary too. Who is the doctor in Calgary that does fills that you know of? I've spoken to a doctor as well. There is a team of doctors that are going through all the red tape to be able to perform the lapband procedure but probably won't be doing it until summer and there is a waiting list however the doctor I spoke to said that he thinks that initially the surgery will be covered by Alberta Health. Mind if I ask what you are looking at paying for yours?

I hope all goes well and you have a speedy recovery.

I going through the the Toronto Lapband Centre and the price is $16,000. (ouch) this is $1000. less than there usual price because of being out of province.

The doctor in Calgary that does fills is Dr. Philip Mitchell 403-264-6720

He's at the Peter Laughheed Centre and charges $100. for a fill.

As far as I know there is no coverage through Alberta Health Care or any insurance companies in Canada.

Hey!

I'm actually in SK. I think I am going with Dr. Cobourn in Ontario, he's $15000, but doesn't have the lifetime fills like TLBC. I'm going to have to ask if they give a cheaper price for people who live far away too.. that would be nice.

Hi Lanie! I live just outside Calgary. I was banded Jan, 16th in Hungary. I also looking for a Dr. who does fills in Calgary? Did You have any luck yet?

I made appointment with Dr.P. Mitchell for March 10, but I feel weird, because I don't know anything about him. How many fills he has done? How he does it (with or without flouroscope) etc..? Do you or anybody has information on this?

Thanks Kati

Kati,

I think Dr. Mitchell should be good. I'm getting banded in March by Dr. Cobourn, and when asking him what I should do if I can't get to HIM for a fill, he told me about Dr. Mitchell (because he's closest). He's not just any doctor who figured out how to do fills. He is a LapBand surgeon, and DOES the lapband, he just can't do it in Alberta, because Alberta won't allow it. (I guess cause they don't cover it)

I don't think he does it with flouro, because it sounds like it's just out of his private clinic.

Please do let me know how it goes with him, cause I'd be curious to hear how your experience is.

Mandi

Hello Calgary folk

I have found out Dr Mitchell's phone number - that's it so far. I am on Topamax for migranes and it seems that it has tightened my band (only joking it has slowed my appetite) so for now i don't need the fill i thought i did. Maybe we should get together all us Calgary bandsters - done or not?

Any suggestions?

Just for the record I have lost 62lb in 2.5 years with the band - it saved my life.

Glenda

Hey, Paulax, do you know if Dr. Leung will do, or does fills on patients other than his own, and if so, how much he charges?

Thanks

My surgeon was Dr. Woodhead in Ladner BC. The cost was 13,500. This includes all fills. Not sure if you can see him if you are not a patient though. I would give him a call to see.

Woodhead R V Dr

4515 Harvest Dr 206, Ladner, BC V4K4L1

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
