after surgery

Recommended Posts

I'm just wondering on what people are advise what to eat after surgery?!? It seems like every doctor is very different with the rules that they are giving everyone. My doctor is

putting me on a liquid diet for 2 weeks after surgery then I start the soft foods for another 2 weeks and after that start working in food. Just want to know if everyone had to

do the same thing. I've been looking up online and reading people comments and I even notice some people was eating chicken noodle Soup 3 days after thier surgery. I don't see how that would be very smart, but then again I havent gotten the lap band done yet. I have my surgery on the 14th and Very Excited!!

As you said, every doctor is different. My surgeon only asked me to do Clear liquids for the one day before surgery, but I had to do a liquid diet for three weeks after surgery, then three more weeks on soft foods. Finally, after that I'll get my first fill, (come on Monday!), be on liquids for a day or two, then be allowed solids. That's when the real fun starts.

I've also seen how some doctors have their patients on solids within a short time, and I wonder why things are so different. So you're in good company.

As an aside, I do have to say I've had ZERO food eating issues post-op. I have not been sick, thrown up, slimed, or anything else. So maybe taking it slow was the right thing for me. Now that I'm past that phase, I have no complaints.

Dave

Every doctor is different as every patient is different. My doctor usually has his patients back on solid food by the end of two weeks if all is going well. You have to find a doctor that you trust and can follow 90 to 95% of their guidelines. YMMV

Hi There

Each doctor is different.

My doc had me on a 2 wk pre op diet that consisted of Protein shakes, Protein Soups and 1 Protein Bar a day.

After surgery I was full liquids for the first 10 days. Muscle Milk lite, S/F Jello, S/F pudding, broth and skim milk.

Then day 11-21 is soft/mushie foods. I am just starting this phase today, and it's wonderful!

I think keeping to your doctors plan is key to your recovery. I'm afraid to stray off the path because I don't want to damage anything while I'm still healing.

Good luck with your surgery, and you'll find lots of good advice and information along with support on these forums.

Take care..Chris

SInce posting on this site I have noticed that every Dr seems to vary a little with their advice, rules and treatment plans... so I have decided to stick with what my Dr. says unless I find its not working then discuss it with him and go from there.

I stuck to the food intake plan without a misstep and today I am heading to my 1 month post op appointment down almost 50 lbs since 11/24/10 where I hope to get my first fill.

Pre Surg diet - Optifast shakes, Water, tea, sugar free popsicles

Surg to 1 week = Clear Liquids

2 weeks post op = thicker liquids

3 weeks post op = mushie foods

4 weeks post op= soft to regular diet

5 weeks and beyond: 1 serving = 1/4 cup ... total daily intake is listed below:

3 vegtables

2 fruits

3 starch

3 fats

5 oz meat

I was lucky. I only had a clear liquid diet 1 day before surgery then for 3 days post op. Then I had a slip off the spoon diet for 1 week then 2-3 weeks post op I was ok'd for solids. I have tolerated everything very well and have had no problems at all. Good luck on your journey :)

Disclaimer: speak with your surgeon. My person experience was 1 week clear liquids, but could have whey isolate Protein shakes (which are'nt clear); 1 week thicker liquids (tomato Soup for example but not chicken noodle blended) plus Protein Shakes, 1 week soft low fat ricotta and cottage cheese and again thicker liquids, week four added in scrambled eggs and tuna fish and canned chicken.

At my two week follow up I asked if I could move forward to next stage (2 days early). The answer NO!

Yes doctor's order vary greatly. I know many people say this but my doctor is very well respected (people go to him to fix problems caused by other surgeons); and so far knock on wood I have'nt had any problems. I'm not saying this to be mean but often when people post about having a food issue immed. post surgery it's becuase they moved ahead on their own and ate something they should'nt have. Most doctors use a diet similar to what I was given and they do it for a reason. Your stomach undergoes a level of trauma during surgery and needs to heal around the band. I highly recommend watching a surgery on YouTube. Very cool and no blood.

Reading your post just made me realize that the importance of the pre/post diets and the reason behind them. I am having surgery this Friday and feeling so sick of the diet and worried I might have to be on the Pre-diet one more week, due to a snow storm. But I realized after reading your post gave me the courage......... that its just one more week and that I am so very blessed to be able to change my life this way................after 15 yrs of obesity! Has anyone out there had problem with serious cramping in there legs? My surgeon told me to eat banana's and Tums. Thanks Lori :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
