Vomitting

Recommended Posts

Hey Everybody! I am a newbie and haven't decied whether or not the lap band is right for me. I was hoping that some of you may be able to tell me if you experienced vomiting soon after the surgery, during any time on your special diet,or how common it is once you start eating regular foods again. All of your input is very appreciated!

Vomiting is not something that should be happening, and if you eat right chew correctly and take it slow you may never vomit.

Dont let the idea of vomiting hinder you from your decision about getting the band.

I only vomited when I was too tight or ate too fast or took to big of a bite, all of which can be avoided.

Good luck on your decision...

I have had some vomiting when I am too tight- suffered longer than I needed too because I hesitated to go in for an unfill. Didn't want to be hungry. Overall, it shouldn't happen. When it does, it isn't that bad. It's not like heaves for anything- I cough and the food comes up pretty gently. I wouldn't let it discourage you from gettting banded. Good luck!

I came home today and had a half cup of turkey chili. I enjoyed it and realized the last time I ate was at work around 12! So I was impressed that I wasn't hungry for 4 hours. I would have tried to eat something at work if I was. Anyway, I sat down to computer and picked up a bag of almonds I keep there. I absent mindedly ate several and probubly didn't chew them very well. All of a sudden I felt like vomitting! It was the worst feeling I have felt since being banded 2 wks ago! :( I burped some and thought I should lie down but then thought it might be better if I sit up. So I sat there quietly and soon felt better. I will always remember that and chew, chew, chew!!

The thought of vomiting all the time made me delay my surgery for a long time. You can read some real horror stories around these parts.

i hate vomiting.

Since being banded in August I've only had 1 incident of bringing something back up because I let myself get too hungry and took that first bite of some dry turkey too fast. My neck looked like a snake swallowing a mouse!!

It wasn't like regular vomiting it's more like a hard burp and that bit of food came back up. That's why they call it a PB = productive burping.

Don't let that sway you from your decision as said above if you follow the rules it won't happen much or even at all.

Dee

I have been banded since November 22nd and haven't vomitted at all. Considering that I absolutely hate to throw up, I try to do everything necessary to prevent vomitting (chew food well, eat slowly, etc.). As one person stated, you should not be vomitting with the band if you are doing what you are told to do. Good luck with your decision!

I posted a similar question as well. I am still trying to decide whether or not to get the band. My biggest concern is vomitting. I HATE it. I honestly think I have emetophobia. I know it sounds silly.

The refunding you infrequently get with the band is not accompanied by nausea. The food usually is not mixed with gastric juices so it doesn't taste nasty. It's a whole different thing than the N&V we're all familiar with from being ill.

please dont let fear of vommiting prevent you from getting this lifesaving tool! you will not vomit if you obey the rules..chew slowly..eat under 4oz..ect. you have to listen to your band. when it tells you that you are full you must stop..or you may vomit. I was banded november 17 2010 and have only vomitted once and i had the flu..it had nothing to do with my band!!

Ditto month post op, zero vomiting. I'm guessing it mainly happens if you eat WAY too much or you are adjusted too tight and food can't pass through.

Not to put a damper on this post but some people do vomit more than others. I have vomited since I got the band. Sure some of it was not chewing well enough or tyring to eat the wrong things. I hate to vomit also but for a long time it was a way of life for me. My surgeon worked with me on this but whenever I go stuck it would NEVER go down it always come up. I have drank coffee and for no reason the coffee would just shoot up through my mouth and my nose. I know it is gross but if you want to be honest some people do vomit alot. Some is our fault and some it not.

I have never eaten too much to make me vomit, but sometimes my pouch just rejects what I put in it. I have a 10cc AP Band and only have 3.8 cc and I have just enough fill without being overfilled.

Do not let that stop you it would not me. I am now almost 18 months out and vomited tonight for no reason I have not vomited in months. But it is over in a minute. I think spicy food causes mine. Just because I do does not mean you will. I have 2 banded friends and they are 2 years out and neither of the have ever vomited because of the band. But one friend does slime alot where I never do. I would rather vomit than to slime.

But I have lost 84 lbs and am healthly so alot of food does stay down. But to be honest it does happen to some people not because of them.

My experience is like Cheri's. It happens, and not always at the fault of the "eater".

I took my nightly pills a few nights ago about 3 hours after my meal, and they just caused so much discomfort that they eventually came back up.

I will see my doc on the 26th about it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
