Restriction... No wait... No restriction!

Recommended Posts

I had my second fill of 2cc's December 16th. I now have a total of 4cc's in my 14cc band. I immediately felt some of the elusive "Restriction" and even had a few stuck episodes. I was thrilled to finally to know what everyone meant!

By New Years, however, it was gone. Now I have read about this happening, so I am not overly concerned. Disappointed, but not concerned. My question is, Am I closer to restriction now that this has happened. Should I ask for a smaller fill at my next appointment (Jan 26th)?

I did gain about 2 lbs over the holidays and it's almost all gone now, but I am not sure what the scale will reflect by my appointment. Any advice?

Thanks! And good luck everyone!

Good morning Kim,

I hope i can explain this clearly. Bear with me. Please don't feel disappointed. This is very normal.

When you have your band placed, there will be some amount of fat in the area that is in between the band and your stomach. When you get a fill, the band is tightened around that area. You might feel some restriction. But when you start to loose weight, that fat will shrink as well. Your will not be as tight then, and you wont feel the same restriction. This is when it is time for another fill.

When you loose weight and the percentage of fat in that area is less and you feel restriction with a fill, that feeling will last longer and longer with each consecutive fill.

I wish you a happy journey.:D

I hope my explanation wasn't too confusing,

If I may, I also understand it's normal to experience a bit of swelling in the band area after a fill. This can result in what I'm thinking of as "false restriction." You may experience some of the restriction you're seeking, but when the swelling goes down, you're back to feeling less (or no) restriction. Nothing is wrong, you're just not there yet.

I posted recently to ask how much fill 14cc bandsters had on average before feeling restriction. The average seems to be around 7-8ccs. So with only 4cc's in your band, it would appear you're not yet there. Hang in there, and keep working the program. It'll come with time.

Good luck!

Dave

Isn't it nice to know that you're "normal"? I had my first fill on 12/13 (3.5 to 5.5 in a 14cc band) and also had great restriction...for about 2 weeks. I made it through the holidays without gaining and had another fill today to 7cc.

With the first fill, I could actually eat from the first day. (Forgot about doing liquids for a day or 2.) With my fill this morning, if it isn't liquid, it isn't going down! To see just how much restriction I have, I gulped about a cup of Water. Have you ever gotten stuck on Water? (Fortunately, I was near a sink!)

Like Dave mentioned, it would seem that you are still aways from true restriction. Are you paying per fill? It seems that those that do, get smaller fills, which means more of them. My fills are included, so it seems my doc wants to get me to restriction asap. Just wondering.

Thanks for the info, guys! I too am at 4cc in a 14cc band and feel pretty much no restriction. I am exercising and tracking my food, trying to follow the "bandster" rules, but haven't really lost anything since my fill on 12/27. Am so hoping my next fill will help a little (scheduled for 1/27). Thanks for the information and encouragement:)

I know what you mean.. I did not gain over the holiday's however I did not loose anything either and I am so frusterated ... I have lost a total of 52 lbs so far and can't wait for the other 60 to come off. The whole restricted and then not restricted is frusterating. I have had a total of 4 fills and am curr at 8 cc's in my 12 cc band and I feel this is perfect I'm not to hungry and not to full. However I did notice the other day that it is more restricted lately so Im thinking Im eating to fast or something. It is something to get used to.

Thanks, everyone, for all the helpful advice. Thankfully, all pay for fills is my copay. I kinda thought maybe restriction already was too good to be true, but at least I know what to look for now.

Thanks again!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
