Nearly a year after surgery-and I NEED HELP!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I hope everybody is having a healthy and happy new year!

I got my surgery done February 22, 2010 and have lost 41 pounds. I am getting frustrated and discouraged and could use some help.

I have had all of the adjustments that Barix clinic thinks I should have, which is fine with me. I have extreme restriction in the mornings, so much sometimes that I can barely drink Water or take my morning meds. By afternoon I am STARVING and can still only manage soft, liquidy foods most days- and even those get backed up sometimes. At night (by about 7pm), my band seems to open like it should and I find myself eating. And eating. AND EATING....more than a cup of food (more like 2-3 cups). I feel full, sometimes too full, but I deal with it.

I am tired constantly, despite taking a daily Vitamin and attempting to eat Protein rich foods. The nurses say that they don't think I need any more Fluid taken out of my band...but I'm not so sure.

The worst thing is, that they keep telling me it is NORMAL for SOME band patients to feel the same restrictions in the A.M. BUT I HAVE ONLY LOST 41 pounds in nearly a year and I feel like CRAP.

I have an appointment on Jan 11th and was thinking of going in and TELLING them to take more Fluid out. I am afraid that if they take too much though, I will be able to eat more (and healthier) foods, but will gain what little I have lost back!

I used to weigh 398 lbs, lost a bunch of it throughout years of struggling, Weight Watchers and Adkins and went into surgery weighing 245.5 lbs....could I just be losing slower than others because I had already lost nearly 45% of my total body weight? My surgeon seems to think so, but I am skeptical.

Thanks for reading and responding =)

You band being too tight until evening doesnt sound good. What if you drink something hot? If that doesnt work I would definitely have some Fluid removed. You need to be able to eat during the day. I think that would stop you from eating at night more also. Good luck

I don't have my band yet, but I have heard of people "warming the band" in the morning with hot tea, non caffine of course...good luck!

I am one that has to have a Protein Shake for Breakfast and yogurt or chili for lunch because my band is tighter at those times. For dinner I can eat one cup of anything. My doctor said this is perfectly fine restriction. I have never pb'd and I don't have reflux. If I were you I wouldn't get an unfill and try to stick to only one cup of solid Protein at dinner.

And you might be right about your slower weight loss being because you already had lost so much before. Congratulations on how far you have come.

I'm right there with you, and it sucks!

I got my band 3/31/10 and have lost 20 pounds (started at 217.5, now 197.5). I cannot eat anything, and for 2 days haven't even been able to drink more than 1 gulp every few hours. I HATE HATE HATE this, and am starting to wish I never had the lapband. I cannot seem to find my sweet spot; either I have way too much in or my Dr. takes out too much and I don't have any restriction.

I have decided to go in tomorrow and ask him to remove Fluid. I've joined weight watchers, but cannot even eat 5 points throughout the day. When I tell my Dr. I can't eat, he says, "You're obviously able to eat some things since you're maintaining your weight." and won't take out Fluid. I am literally going insane from not physically being able to eat.

You definately need to ask them to take out fluid. Not being able to eat is not healthy physically or mentally.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
