4 days post op & often feel the need to take deep breaths

Recommended Posts

Okay I have a post op question , I am sorry if this has been asked previously. But, I have already "searched"and have not found anything about this. So, Ms. Fluffy back off if you're only going to say something negative!

Anyway....I am 4 days post op and I am finding myself having to take deep breaths from time to time throughout the day. Sometimes on exertion - sometimes not. I already called my surgeons office yesterday, she said it could be "diapheratic irritation" whatever that is ??? I thought maybe it was excess gas pushing up on the diaphram.

And what's up with the runny nose, what a strange side effect ???

Any thoughts ?

I am 13 months out now, but I do remember having to take those deep breaths (kind of like a gasp for air). I remember it subsiding after a few weeks though. Also remember asking the PA during a post-op visit, and he assured me it was normal. Never had the runny nose. You will be fine. And to anyone out there ... 1 year out or several years out .. WE WERE ALL NEWLY BANDED AT ONE TIME! Don't be scared off by some Trolls on the board, ask anything you want in order to get the support you need! Good luck everybody! I'm 13 month outs out, 110 pounds down and have 10 pounds to go. Don't give up, YOU CAN DO IT!

So, yeah I'm on day 3 and having the same issue...when I walk up the statirs or talk too much...I am finding that it is getting better though the more I move around, and cough, no runny nose though. These gas pains are killing me..and I feel full for hours on 4 0z. I'm just waiting for this horrible phase to pass.

I had to take deep breaths like that after my surgery I think it's the bodies way of shaking off the anesthesia...

Yeah I had that same problem after surgery, I just thinks it one of the side effects from the surgery.

Keep moving and do deep breathing exercises every few hours. Sometimes the diaphram gets irritated as the surgeon was doing his/her thing banding you some body parts are moved ever so slightly up against the diaphram and irritated it ... along with the gas pushing everything up..it doesn't help.

Zeniada, good to see you are posting, I was hoping that you were ok.

Ahhhhhh! So glad you posted this. I am day 4 post OP (banded on Wed) and I am feeling the same. I feel tight and bloated today. I have not been able to eat/drink very well today. It is like a get a "wave" of pain from my stomach through my shoulders and a little burp after I eat or drink. I guarantee I didn't get anywhere close to the amount of liquids in today! :(

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
