New Bandster in Canada

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I was just banded on Jan 5th, 2011 and am in Winnipeg, MB Canada. I`m doing okay, 3 days post op and looking forward to getting to know some of you here. I am down about 20lbs from the pre-op diet but I hear this may stall for the next few weeks. In Canada this is a surgery that is not covered by health care so I had to pay out of pocket. Generally the first fill is 6 weeks post op. It`s quite a journey to be on but I`m looking forward to being able to do a lot more with my 3 kids. I`ve chosen not to tell anyone about the surgery except my husband of course and my dad who is in another province. I`m curious to know what other people have chosen in this regard. Well, off to try and get more fluids into me...I`ve never been a ``sipper`` lol.

Welcome! My dad was born in Winnipeg! :) I promise I won't complain of the cold here in Ohio to you...I didn't tell many about my surgery either. I told my husband, kids, sisters and a couple close friends. That was four years ago and I haven't felt the need to tell anyone since. I suppose if someone heavy asked me how I lost all that weight I'd tell them just to pay it forward, but that hasn't happened yet. lol

I've been banded for four years and am maintaining around five pounds from my "goal". If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Good luck on your journey!

Hi im in the same boat...My surgery is feb 23rd and im still debating if i should tell anyone? Only my husband and i know...If i tell one i must tell all..Im scared of all the judgement...I wish i was that type of outgoing person and tell everyone and not have a care in the world....Would i be lying if i told people how i was loosing weight??I am changing the way i eat i will be exercising....The band is only a tool that will limit my portions it's up to me to make the right choices of foods....It's no different if i were to purchase a personal trainer and join a weight loss clinique?? accept im buying a lifetime commitment with my band....I suppose if i were to purchase a lifetime of personal trainers and support from a weightloss clinque the cost would be the same....I don't know why i feel so ashamed to say anything??Ohwell anyone elese out there not tell anyone or wait until you lost the weight to tell everyone??

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
