down and out.........

Dear aslimmerme,

I did not start losing well till I had my third fill...I'm wondering if you are where you need to be at this point. I'd talk to your doctor...My doctor says that you should feel satified for four hours at a time after eating a small portion of protein(1/2 the size of your fist) and a side of vegetables and/ furit. Ive been on the plan for one year and have lost 60 lbs...there are alot others that have done better than that..but for me...I feel fortunate that Im heading the right direction after years of trying every diet under the sun with no results. Feeling full for one in my life...is a awesome feeling!

Talk to your doctor...since you have a large fill it seems already...wonder if he would take it out and refill it just to make sure your band is holding liquid. just an idea.....

Hang in there...!

Be happy now, don't waste anymore time being unhappy at least you're not a size 20 anymore! Life is too short to base your happiness on your weight, think about how much healthier you are now and how much better your old age will be because you had the surgery. also your not gaining weight like before the surgery right? hang in there!

U guys I was sp excited abt having my lapband surgery. Just the thought of losing weight and putting on stylish clothes and feeling good abt myself again was like a dream to come true. But now i feel like im getting no where, it's been 17 months and i've only lost 47lbs im getting so discouraged, my start on the journey was good, then it just got slow and and now its darn right hard to get the scale to even move,i was in a size 20 now im in a 14 but i have been in this 14 seems like forever and a year!!!!!!! my goal is to get the scale down to 165. I just dont feel that its going to happen for me, i read and see of of u guys stories and results im like wow, i know their happy and feel good again!! I want to feel good abt myse;f again so badly and to be able top look in the mirror and be happy abt what i see looking back instead of this fat person i know i still im. now with new yr i said i got to do this i want to make it at my goal by or b4 my birthday in august. i know i have to kick it up on the walking and working out. but are there any other helpfully suggestions u guys can give me. i have a 10cc band i think im at 8.5 or 9cc, i still pretty much can eat what i want, i feel more restriction now than i have the whole 17 months i been banded. Sometimes i have a problem with getting some foods to stay down, sometimes it will come back up, but i feel i could be/should be tighter. I have to be honest ova the holidays i did now try to lose weight, now im back on track and ready to get this weight off once and for all. what do anyone suggest as far as what foods to eat and would u get another fill?? i need some help u guys, i dont want to have been went through surgery and took the pain from it for nothing. i have just got to beat this weight battle, it has taken to much from me i want to live and be happy with me again and i cant do this until i get the rest of this weight off me.

Thank u for the advice, will give it a try. i thought i was doing ok with my carbs but im abt to seriously be on it, i have got to get the lbs down. The only thing that im intaking now is yogurt that have carbs like that but my nurse told me a while ago that ,that was fine. she's telling me things like Protein shakes but i cant find one that i like besides carnations instant bkfast, but then its watch the sugars in it im like unsure.gifok . but like i said at this point im ready to give it a try. thanks again for the advice will try.

Is there a Kroger grocery store where you live? Kroger has a brand of yogurt called Carbmaster.. very low carbs in it. Or look for the PLAIN Lowfat Greek yogurt.. not the stuff with fruit added.. that's too much sugar. The plain low fat greek yogurt that I can find (Dannon, Yoplait) has only about 5 or 7 carbs and between 80 to 100 calories in a small container and usually about 15 grams of Protein. I add my own fresh or frozen fruit to it.

The other poster who made the observation that perhaps it wasn't that you are too tight, but that perhaps it was size of bites and rapidity of eating has a good point. Glad you're going to get in to the doc and investigate all these possibilities. I understand getting things coordinated.. my doc is only an hour away and that seems difficult. :)

Have a good night.

Melisannde,

Thanks for the tip on the Carbmaster yoghurt. I love yoghurt but gave it up due to the carbs...and I've just never gotten to the point where I like Greek yoghurt.

Sadly, too many WLS doctors lead us to believe that the band works by physically restricting how much we can eat. It might happen that way for some people but for many of us that never happens. The band's major job is to put pressure on the vagus nerves which in turn tell the stomach to stop producing ghrelin, the hunger hormone. Some get enough pressure with just the band. Others need varying amounts of fill.

So my question is, what makes you believe you don't have enough restriction yet...the fact that you are actually physically hungry all the time or very soon after a meal...or that you can still eat too much? If the former, then it's time for a fill. If the latter, then the band is already doing it's job and now it's up to you.

Probably not what you wanted to hear. I didn't either. I was waiting for the band to physically stop me from overeating. It never did...not even when I was overfilled...but it does stop the hunger. I can eat a small (compared to what I used to eat) meal of 3 oz of Protein and 1/2 cup of vegies (sometimes 1/4 cup of rice or potatoes if I'm having a hungrier day) and not be hungry for 4 hours or so.

If you want to get back on track, and are having difficulty, perhaps first start with eliminating wheat and sugar (they usually go hand in hand) from your diet. For most people, after about a week or so, any cravings to eat just disappear. After about a week, start dropping your carbs (I track mine in Fitday.com) until you're below 60 and those carbs should come from vegies.

You can do this. You may not have lost anything for 17 months but the fact that you're not still piling on the weight says you're obviously doing something right. Now you just have to tweak it so your body will start losing again. Good luck. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
