Tammartin 0 Posted January 8, 2011 My doctor told me to stay on a liquid diet for four weeks after surgery. I am finding this impossible and have been eating solid foods. Am I the only one who is doing this? Any pointers for me? Has anyone experienced complications due to eating solids right after surgery? I really appreciate all the replies! Melissannde 41 Posted January 8, 2011 My doctor told me to stay on a liquid diet for four weeks after surgery. I am finding this impossible and have been eating solid foods. Every doctor will have a different schedule for refeeding after banding. Why would you want to go through the surgery to start eating solids so soon? The slow progression to solid foods is to let the band settle in and make a good seating around the stomach. When you eat solids too soon, the stomach works harder (peristalsis) to break it down and you are running the risk of breaking stitches and band slippage. PLEASE try to stick to the post-op diet that your doctor prescribes. 4 weeks does seem like a long time, but surely it's not just Clear Liquids.. Call your doctor's office and try to get in and talk to the nutritionist or dietician. Be honest about what you've been doing so that they can help you. You've come too far to risk messing up now. nu2ywg 4 Posted January 8, 2011 I would check with your doctor, 4 weeks seems like a long time unless there was something unusual with your surgery. For my surgery, the first 2 weeks are things like Protein supplement drinks, clear or cream Soups with no chunks, yogurt, applesauce, baby food, etc. Phase 2 is 2 to 4 weeks and includes soft solids like soups with noodles or small chunks, cottage cheese, eggs, mashed Beans, oatmeal, soft cooked veggies, canned fruit...I`m looking forward to phase 2 but am only 3 days post op. Did your doctor give you any kind of handout at all...I would definitely check. Four weeks seems like a long time but I wouldn`t do anything without checking first. Good luck! IndioGirl55 32 Posted January 8, 2011 #1 FOLLOW YOUR DOCTORS ORDERS !!!!! The reason not to eat food is that your stomach is healing - band is sewn to your stomach - you can cause these stitches not to hold... You just had surgery - Just because someone else has a different schedule for each food phase doesn't mean you should follow their advice - they are not doctors - each doc has their own plan - some docs have better results/no complication than others.. Make a pot of Beans - any kind you like - seasoned as you like - then when the Beans are done - put them in a blender with a little of the broth - puree them - then add them back to the broth - cream of bean Soup - it's so much better for you and taste better than the canned stuff... You can do damage by eating - Please don't ask pple here to put their stamp of approval on what you are doing - Just cuz someone does the same thing as you doesn't make it right or ok - it's still wrong.. You can do this... This is just the beginning of your journey - follow the rules you will be successful

Amanda1982 142 Posted January 10, 2011 I am with the others follow you doctors advice.....If there is something you want to change, talk to your doctor. Why go thru all this to the band and then work against it. There are some cook books out there one is "Living Well After Weight Loss Surgery" check the book stores. Liquid does not just mean Water and drinks. PLEASE DONT DO ANYTHING THAT COULD HURT YOU IN THE LONG RUN
djmixon 1 Posted January 10, 2011 I screwed up and have eaten solid food too soon after banding (12/30/10) ...... and I feel badly, but I know I can do better. Each day is new and I can only control this food addiction one day at a time. Do what your doctor says. He/she knows best.
Tammartin 0 Posted January 14, 2011 Thank you all for taking the time to reply to me. I am a month post op and I am going for my first fill in two weeks. I am happy I have people I can talk to about my situation because this is a very emotional time. None of my family and friends have the lap band so they cannot relate. I am excited to see the results.
