Did your Dr have you stop meds......

Recommended Posts

I know that some of us can go without some medication after we have lost some weight. I am on blood pressure meds......did your Dr tell you to try stopping(controlled) or were tests done and he went by results? How was it done with you?

I'm not supposed to take any meds or Vitamins unless I can chew them. This is a problem because I take high doses of a specific fish oil for skin problems, amongst other things. I've had to switch to a liquid fish oil that judging by the label, should be more effective if not better, but it's not and some of my symptoms are starting to return.

Other than that, I can take any meds so long as they are in liquid or chewable form, no other restrictions. But let me tell you, crushing Vitamins and pills gets old real fast!

I can see where chewing them would be preferable. I meant to post this in the post op group. I meant any meds like for high blood pressure, diabetes, ect that can become unneccessary after weight loss.

I had gotten some Calcium pills that taste like chalk....they were the only citrate that I could find at the time. Next time I will get some chewable from the Vitamin shoppe I found. I have cheese(laughing cow) spread and crackers when I "chew them up":) Yes, it's like chewing chalk......

I have a friend who no longer needs diabetes and one other med, but I forget what it is. Is that what you meant?

Yes, I was wondering what kind of time span is involved. Like how soon have some meds been stopped. I'm sure some time needs to go by and everyone is different on how much they loose and how fast. I hope that I can stop all of my blood pressure pills eventually.

I have been able to take all of my other pills ok. But one is chalky and dissolves easy and one is small. The bp pills are different sizes, but I can swallow them.

I found it strange also that on the day of discharge the WLS coordinator came in my room and said " stop thaking you're HCTZ (bp med), you won't need it anymore"

Now, I can see stopping it once I lose more significant weight, but I have only lost 10 lbs. Not enough IMO to just stop the meds. But, it is a form of diaretic and right now fulids are somewhat limited so, maybe it has some bearing.

I am going to have to double my efforts in checking my BP at home, just to reassure myself that I am good to go. B)

I have wondered about my meds as well.... I am on an anti depressant and I don't think I can chew it since its probably time release.... how do we find out if a prescription comes in a liquid form? Can we not swallow pills at all anymore...????

One thing you can do is call the pharmacy you use. If they say they don't carry it you can ask if it's possible that someone does. I take anti-seizure, coumadin and 4 bp pills. I still swallow them whole(2 wks post op).

One of my Diabetes pills was too big. I spokewith my GP and she prescribed a smaller dose (I had to take more to make up for the smaller amount) but it was a size I could cut and swallow better. All my other pills were small enough to take. From what my nutritionist advised: I should see my GP every couple months if losing weight well. They can run bloodwork to see what you can come off of or reduce in amount.

Also, Vitamin Shoppe has a really good Calcium in liquid form. I add it to my Protein shake in the morning but I couldn't see why you couldn't mix it with some milk, yogurt etc.

I take the same meds too, I open my capsule and dump the stuff in a spoon topped with liquid fish oil (lemon flavor) and I don't even taste it. It's just as effective as when I took the capsule before. I'm sure they're time released also.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
