Teenge Cousin is talking surgery

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. So I've been thinking very seriously about lapband surgery, which is one of the reasons I joined this group--to get information and inspiration. Well, yesterday I was talking about it to my cousin who is seventeen and weighs even more than I do. She knew everything and more about lapband surgery, which shocked me. She told me she read a new novel (young adult) called Teenage Waistland. She calimed she read it twice, and wanted to lend it to me. So, I just started it last night and it's really engaging. It's about a group of teens who are in a trial study to get lapband surgery. My cousin can't get surgery until she's eighteen, but this book has given her hope. I'm hoping by reading this, I can even become more familiar and comfortable with the process (even though my teen years are long gone). I'll let you all know how it is!

To be truthful if this had been an option at 18 I probably would have taken it. As long as she is aware of the work and restrictions that come with the band and is a mature 18 this could be the best thing for her. The more research that comes out the more I see how things were stacked against me. Recently there was a study that said that in families that have a history of alcolism in the males the females are more likely to be obese. This supports my belief that my brother and I have addictive personalities his led him to drink, mine to eating.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
